Lifeboat Movie Review

Lifeboat is a 1944 thriller drama film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Tallulah Bankhead among others. It is such an underrated Hitch entertainer.

Dying together’s even more personal than living together

Lifeboat Movie Review……………………………………………………

It is set on a lifeboat which contains survivers from a sinking ship during a naval attack in World War II. One of the people on the boat is German so the conflict naturally arises. This is one of those limited space movies and Hitchcock’s take on it is quite inspired which was expected from his caliber. The movie is consistently engaging and works as a great chamber drama while also being a triller.
The character development is quite stupendous. Some characters are weaker and less interesting such as Alice and Hume, but others such as Ritt and Gus are quite memorable. But of course Kovac and Connie are the standouts and I just loved their dynamic. The movie is surprisingly sensual for a Hitchcock film. She is such a great character, very competent and complex, fuelled by Tallulah Bankhead’s absolutely terrific performance. She should have been Oscar nominated for this role in my opinion.

Lifeboat Movie Review

…………………………………………………..

There is one problem in Lifeboat and that is its treatment of Germans. I realize that it was pretty different and even too positive for that time, but for now not so much. Willi is too much of a villain here and it is totally ridiculous that anyone on a boat surrounded by Americans would think he has a chance against them. I did not like that at all. Gus’s murder raised the stakes, but it was still unnecessary and I felt bad for him.
But there is one person that is suprisingly for its time very well treated here and that’s Joe. Yes, Hitchcock was obviously not a racist for including this character. Joe is very likable and sympathetic and the rest of the group treat him nicely and with respect. It is great seeing a black character portrayed in such a wonderful manner during the 40s.

Lifeboat Movie Review

…………………………………………………..

I liked almost all of its parts. Some scenes in Lifeboat were less interesting than the others, but most of them are very engaging thanks in large part to such excellent characterization and superb dialogue. I loved the dynamic between the group and they honestly felt like such a wonderful group of people. I liked the ending and to me the humor, especially with Connie, is excellent. It needed more thriller elements, but as a drama Lifeboat excels.
Lifeboat is one of the most underrated Hitchcock films. Yes, it may be unrealistic at times and some characters and scenes are less interesting than the others, but it benefits from very strong acting (Tallulah Bankhead is so good here), a terrific set of characters and an intriguing drama and dilemmas brewing between those well-rounded characters. It is also authentic in its setting meaning that not many films of the era revolve on the boat. It is flawed, but it’s an entirely involving, very good and an unfortunately forgotten film from the master of suspense.

A Man and a Woman (1966)

A Man and a Woman Movie Review………………………………………………..

A Man and a Woman Movie Review

A Man and a Woman is a 1966 French romance film directed by Claude Lelouch and starring Anouk Aimee and Jean-Louis Trintignant. It is a solid and beautiful, but very problematic film.

………………………………………………..

If I had to go through this again, what would I do?

………………………………………………..

A Man and a Woman Movie Review………………………………………………..

The film is about a young widow and widower who meet by chance at their children’s boarding school and whose budding relationship is complicated by the memories of their deceased spouses. Now to me it is obvious that this premise is great and pretty interesting as I have never seen a similar plot in a romance flick before. I thought that definitely made the film feel original.

However, the execution is quite troublesome. Mostly the director Claude Lelouch is here to blame as this is an excessive movie with obvious style over substance problems. Everything is polished, beautiful and artistic to the point that it becomes too much and even overly abundant, especially because it hurts the plot as it rarely focuses on it. But mostly the structure with the flashbacks was incredibly off-putting as I personally dislike such an approach in a movie. Yes, it benefited from it a couple of times, but more often than not, it was hurt by it.

………………………………………………..

A Man and a Woman Movie Review………………………………………………..

The character development is okay, but having in mind that this is in a way a chamber piece, it definitely needed to have been much stronger. Both of them are quite likable, but not as interesting as they should have been as they never quite carried the movie. But I liked the performances as Jean-Louis Trintignant is quite good and Anouk Aimee deserved her Oscar nomination as she had some great, emotional scenes in the third act.

Of course A Man and A Woman is a beautiful looking movie. The cinematography is magnificent and I loved its experimental approach to it as it regularly shifts from color to sepia to black-and-white. That is rarely done in cinema and here it was executed wonderfully. It made the movie much more special. The score is also superb and naturally its theme song is beautiful and I loved that it was used often.

The film features a couple of solid and definitely interesting discussions, but the dialogue still left me unsatisfied as it wasn’t as sophisticated or as involving to carry the entire movie. But to me those flashbacks are the major reason why it disappointed me a lot as they were excessive and sometimes honestly quite boring with all of those racing scenes being just so dull and overabundant.

………………………………………………..

A Man and a Woman Movie Review………………………………………………..

The highlights are certainly the beginning and naturally its entire third act which was just beautiful to behold. I loved the sex scene – so emotional, dramatic and ultimately an important plot point. There you see the best examination of this particular subject matter. But the ending itself is where the movie shines as it uses its superb score and cinematography to sell that beautiful ending where they reunite at the train station and the results are so stellar that they elevate the overall movie to much greater heights. But still it is an overrated film that is solid and never great. It did not deserve its four Oscar nominations and two wins and only the actress nod was deserved in my opinion.

A Man and a Woman is a solid, but deeply troublesome film that is ultimately a quintessential example of style over substance. It has a great and interesting premise that is unfortunately well utilized only in its couple of scenes, the flashback structure is quite off-putting at times and the dialogue and characters are never as great as they needed to have been. The cinematography is magnificent as is the score and the ending is definitely beautiful, but the entire film is inherently flawed and in the end overrated.

Moonlight (2016)

Moonlight Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

Moonlight Movie Review

Moonlight is a 2016 drama film directed by Barry Jenkins and starring Andre Holland, Naomi Harris and Mahershala Ali among others. It is a flawed, but ultimately very good film.

…………………………………………………………………….

You’re the only man who ever touched me

…………………………………………………………………….

Moonlight Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

It is a coming-of-age story concerning growing up of a gay black man who is shy and bullied at school while also having problems with his mother who is a drug addict. Now the film is acclaimed but is to me just good and never great mainly because of that drug subplot. To me it had that great, emotional scene between adult Chiron and his mother, but other than that, it was thoroughly underutilized and just took away the running time needed for its first and more important story.

Another problem is that the first half or so, especially its first vignette, felt way too conventional. The film is said to be unconventional and unique, but I never saw that as the first vignette felt clichéd and like a typical coming-of-age flick adding nothing new to the table.

…………………………………………………………………….

Moonlight Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

But the second vignette is much better and it featured a good intimate scene between Chiron and his friend. The bullying aspect was also well done and it was overall much more memorable than the first part. But the third vignette is easily the standout one. It is the part where the film truly shines. Watching the two reunite after ten years was just so emotional to watch. It featured a couple of memorable lines, it was so well filmed and the ending and the entire part was so tragic, yet subtle. It definitely elevated what was otherwise a standard picture.

This film is light in characterization, maybe too light, but it still manages to make this characters feel real mostly thanks to its great attention to detail and excellent, subtle work done in dialogue and script. That was best exemplified in the last part where we get to know both of them really well despite only being with them for a short time.

…………………………………………………………………….

Moonlight Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

Moonlight is naturally very well acted. Naomi Harris did a very good job and she deserved her nomination. However, Mahershala Ali really disappointed me. I do not get why he was Oscar nominated as the role itself was very weak. He was good in it, but the role was so typical and the character was forgettable. To me Andre Holland is the true standout here and he deserved a nomination for sure. His facial expressions and eye contact is phenomenal and he helped elevate an otherwise strong material even more with his excellent performance.

Moonlight is technically well made. The score was forgettable, but the direction from Barry Jenkins is strong and the editing is really good. It is well edited for sure, but the film’s structure isn’t as terrific as everyone said it is. It felt unoriginal to me personally. But the dialogue is fantastic, truly accomplished because with a few lines, the characters said everything we needed to know. That is because the script is clever and understated. But some things still felt unexplained with him being bullied because of his sexuality never being properly established.

…………………………………………………………………….

Moonlight Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

Moonlight is really well shot with good cinematography. And it was very realistic in its characters and story. The film is also very sentimental, but in a good way. “You’re the only man who ever touched me” is the highlight in terms of the quotes, that moment was so powerful in its tragedy and it is the highlight and the most fantastic thing about the entire film. To me, just that line lifted the film to a much more accomplished status. Overall, I found the film to be superb in some areas and truly special, but overall it is not great and is a bit overrated.

Moonlight is quite a good, but honestly a bit overrated film. It features excellent performances from Naomi Harris and Andre Holland, it is very well edited and directed, the script is excellent and the third vignette was just fantastic, so tragic and wonderfully conveyed as a whole, but the first two vignettes (especially the first one) felt overly conventional, the drug addicted mother part was never utilized properly and was rushed and the entire structure of the film was typical to me. The film is clever and sometimes with just a couple of lines it perfectly explained everything we need to know about its characters, but sometimes because of its structure, it skipped too many things and definitely felt underutilized.

Nocturnal Animals (2016)

Nocturnal Animals Movie Review………………………………………………………..

Nocturnal Animals Movie Review

Nocturnal Animals is a 2016 thriller drama film directed by Tom Ford and starring Amy Adams, Jake Gylenhall, Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It is a surprisingly solid film.

………………………………………………………..

Susan, enjoy the absurdity of our world.

It’s a lot less painful.

Believe me, our world is a lot less painful than the real world

………………………………………………………..

Nocturnal Animals Movie Review………………………………………………………..

I liked the plot here quite a bit. It was a very original concept and idea to do a story within a story and this explains the relationships of its characters in the main story. Although that story within a story definitely felt too thriller and gangster-like to me personally, it started off in a really interesting manner and was overall solid. And the main story is the highlight, very well done.

However, the film is a mess regardless of its originality. The film is a giant wasted potential as the execution of its ideas and its concept is never great and is at times even quote mediocre. The editing in particular is very poor and the stories do not mash well together and the transitions are never as smooth as they should have been.

I respect Tom Ford for his idea, but I found his direction to be problematic. It lacked sophistication and the film is never as polished as it should have been and it thoroughly lacks focus. That is why the film is ultimately very flawed, but because I had very low expectations for it to begin with and I dislike thrillers, it was still a pleasant surprise that I liked it as much as I did.

………………………………………………………..

Nocturnal Animals Movie Review………………………………………………………..

The characters are good, but not as great as the plot needed them to have been. I found the main relationship to be solid at best. And I have to say that all of the characters in the story within a story felt somewhat archaic in their presentations and ultimately uninspired.

The acting is one of Nocturnal Animals’ strongest attributes. Everyone speaks about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Michael Shannon’s performances and they are fine, but they aren’t the highlights here, at least not to me. The highlights were Amy Adams and Jake Gylenhall, both giving very underrated performances. She is quite good, although she was better in Arrival, but that just goes to prove what an incredible year she had in 2016. But Jake is really good and his character I found to be the most likable and relatable.

………………………………………………………..

Nocturnal Animals Movie Review………………………………………………………..

From a fashion designer’s point, I expected the cinematography to be much better as the film was overly dark looking. The editing is awful as previously stated and although the dialogue is solid, it was typical at times. The film also needed to be more emotional as I never really connected with either of its characters. Yes, the elements for a strong drama were there, but the film ultimately never succeeds either as a drama or as a thriller as it is only somewhat successful at both of those things. But because the film was so original and because some of its scenes were quite memorable and very interesting to see, I found it to be a pleasant surprise and a solid attempt overall. I think that Tom Ford is talented, but definitely needs more experience.

Nocturnal Animals is an immensely original idea with an intriguing concept to it, the acting is all around superb, some scenes are quite interesting and it is ultimately a solid film, but it is a wasted potential as it could have been much better as the editing is quite mediocre, the film lacked focus, the transitions were poor and its characters are typical.

My Rating – 3.5

Ordet (1955)

Ordet Movie Review………………………………………………………………

Ordet Movie Review

Ordet is a 1955 Danish drama film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. It is a disappointing film from a usually great director.

………………………………………………………………

I believe a lot of little miracles happen secretly.

………………………………………………………………

Ordet Movie Review………………………………………………………………

I really liked the plot in Ordet. It is a fascinating examination of religion and the power of spiritual belief. The ending, although definitely out there, was intriguing and ultimately quite powerful. Some of the other scenes such as the famous poster sequence in the fields were also memorable in imagery and quite fascinating.

But it is ultimately just solid and never great mainly because of the pacing. The film is dreadfully slow which troubled me and thus I was rarely engaged in the storyline thoroughly. It takes its time to get there owing to a slow start and the final third, no matter how powerful, still came too late in the game.

The acting is great, but the character development should have been better. They are solidly developed, but not great which they should have been as this is obviously a chamber piece which needs the characters more than anything else.

Although I really disliked its sometimes overly static approach with too much dialogue and not powerful but somewhat not essential and lacking dialogue, I liked a couple of quotes and lines nonetheless and I really liked the visuals here. Whenever the film went out of the house, it was great to watch and quite fascinating. It of course benefits from an interesting take in terms of the cinematography.

………………………………………………………………

Ordet Movie Review………………………………………………………………

Ordet definitely looked interesting and was superbly shot. It was also really well directed and it was all around great in terms of the technical aspects. However, the script, though definitely sophisticated, was never as well utilized in the execution which felt disappointing and led to a film being more of a visual and interesting than a truly thought-provoking and spiritual experience. That all led to Ordet being a solid, but in the end very disappointing and dull movie. Carl Theodor Dreyer disappointed me here and ‘The Passion of Joan Arc’ and ‘Day of Wrath’ were infinitely better.

Ordet is a solid, but disappointing film. The direction from Carl Theodor Dreyer is expectedly strong, the cinematography is inspired with some of the shots being quite intriguing and the film is clever and very interesting, but because it was so slow paced and lacked focus, it never utilized its premise particularly well and ended up being more of an intriguing than a truly spiritual experience.

Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)

Bridget Jones's Baby Movie Review…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones’s Baby Movie Review

Bridget Jones’s Baby is a 2016 romantic comedy film starring Renne Zellweger, Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey. It is a pretty solid, mostly satisfying sequel.

…………………………………………………….

Did you have a threeway?

……………………………………………………

Bridget Jones's Baby Movie Review…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones becomes pregnant and isn’t sure if Mark Darcy of Jack Qwant is the father and of course hilarity ensues. This entry comes somewhere in the middle. It is of course much weaker than ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’, but it is infinitely better than ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’. It is very good as a second sequel in the franchise, but watching it as a single film, it is more than problematic.

The plot is very mediocre in my opinion. Well, at least the conflict is. This whole drama and uncertainty of who the father is definitely was always a stupid idea from Hollywood, not only implausible, but most evidently soapy. The film around this conflict is actually pretty good, but this particular plot is the major one and that is why the movie is so clichéd and ridiculous.

But as I said, its other parts are great. What I particularly liked is how they developed Bridget. She is here very likable, almost as she was in the original film, and she even learned valuable life lessons and progressed as a person which is excellent as it’s realistic for her age. And the whole portrayal of spinster life in the forties was very well portrayed and in a funny manner.

Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth really didn’t age well, particularly her, but they still gave really good performances and Renee Zellweger once again steals the show and was very endearing as usual. But Patrick Dempsey is extremely likable in his role and I really loved how the two men didn’t enter a fight, but actually learned to cooperate. The relationship that formed between the three was ludicrous, but charming.

…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Baby Movie Review…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones’s Baby isn’t great in terms of storytelling, but in terms of humor, it is more than satisfying as it made me laugh more than a couple of times. Renee’s laugh is contagious and I loved every work scene as those were comedic gems. Miranda in particular is hilarious and some of the interviews she did were just hilarious. And I really liked how she in the end was honest with her boss in a really great dialogue. The film’s ending is too triumphant, but feels earned as it came after three movies. Overall, it could have been much better had it not chosen this ridiculous birth storyline, but it is a pretty stupendous sequel nonetheless.

Bridget Jones’s Baby is very ludicrous and implausible in its major storyline and of course clichéd, but it is still a solid sequel that is overall mostly satisfying thanks to a solid use of its characters, pretty good humor, fine performances and many funny scenes.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones’s Diary Movie Review

Bridget Jones’s Diary is a 2001 romantic comedy film starring Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. It is a surprisingly good romantic comedy flick.

………………………………………………………….

It is a truth universally acknowledged

that when one part of your life starts going okay,

another falls spectacularly to pieces.

………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

This is the kind of film that is a classic romantic comedy meaning that it is entirely predictable from start to finish. She starts dating her boss, but he cheats on her and eventually she ends up with a good man for her who is Hugh Grant’s rival. Even the chase at the end is thoroughly archetypal.

But the film succeeds despite ifs familiarity because it is just so incredibly well executed. Not only are the characters very memorable and the protagonist extremely likable, but the film is both romantic and funny and that is what this genre is supposed to be.

I really liked Bridget Jones as she has such an endearing personality. Renee Zellweger carried the entire movie on her shoulders, delivering a performance that was Oscar-nominated, but she should have won in my opinion. She is simply put wonderful here and the performance and the characterization is so good that you feel like you’ve really met her.

………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

Both Daniel and Mark are typical characters, but they are well developed and I liked the feud that forms between the two. Hugh Grant is absolutely insufferable as he always is, but I shouldn’t blame that on the movie as that’s actually the point here. But Colin Firth is so likable and you root for the two to end up together as they’re such a charming couple.

I really liked the subplot with Jones’s parents. The two are having difficulties, but in the end, she comes back to him in a sequence that is both funny and very heartwarming. Another highlight in terms of the scenes is the last one. It is a cliché for sure, but watching the two hug and kiss on a snowy street is a memorable image to end the movie on. The film takes its time to get there owing to a somewhat less interesting first act, but the rest of it is great.

Bridget Jones’s Diary is very romantic and some sequences are really touching, but never overly emotional. It is done in the best way possible and if all of romantic comedies were this well made, the familiarity of their stories would be forgiven. The humor is terrific and is, along with Zellweger’s performance, the film’s highlight. The central character is very funny, but so are her parents. The film made me laugh a lot of the times and it made me smile almost throughout the whole running time which is why I liked it so much and I really didn’t expect that. It is one of the most stupendous films I’ve seen recently.

………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

It is well directed and mostly well paced as the film is never boring or rushed. Most of the plot points worked and even though I knew everything that was going to happen, it was so well made that I enjoyed the experience nevertheless. I also have to mention the score. It is the kind of film that uses pop songs and it does that really well as most of the songs are perfectly utilized in the movie and they accompany their scenes fittingly.

It is an entirely predictable movie, but Bridget Jones’s Diary succeeds because it is just so well made. The acting is terrific, the romance is great and the highlights are Zellweger’s performance which is fantastic and should have brought her an Oscar and the humor which is really good and it made me laugh a lot. I knew how it would end, but it was still an enjoyable experience as it was so charming and endearing.

Happy Together (1997)

Happy Together Movie Review…………………………………………………………….

Happy Together Movie Review

Happy Together is a 1997 Chinese romance film directed by Wong Kar-wai and starring Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung. It is a very good, poignant film.

It follows a Hong Kong couple who visit Argentina hoping to renew their ailing relationship. The two share a very tumultuous relationship full of abuse and breakups. Now frankly this plot is nothing remarkable nor is it original. And we’ve seen relationships and characters like this before in a number of movies. But the film is still very good as it makes the most use of its situations and characters and, thanks to Wong Kar-wai’s direction, it becomes an understated, elegant work.

…………………………………………………………….

Turns out that lonely people are all the same.

…………………………………………………………….

Happy Together Movie Review…………………………………………………………….

If I have to be honest, ‘In the Mood for Love’ is to me a much better crafted movie. I know this is the first movie to be released, but the aforementioned movie has a much more memorable ending which is very similar here, but never as epic. The score is the reason why this movie is inferior as it is never as beautiful as it was there.

But that ending is still strong and this is the first time we see the director tackle with his signature style of mixing romance and moving human drama with powerful landscapes, good music and an otherworldly atmosphere. And he did once again mostly a great job here and did elevate this familiar material in the process. In the hands of a different director, this would have been a standard romance. But in the hands of Wong Kar-wai, it becomes something much more than that.

…………………………………………………………….

Happy Together Movie Review…………………………………………………………….

I loved Happy Together’s theme of loneliness. It beautifully showcases romantic yearning, but also a yearning for home country and both are the strongest forms of loneliness, both very well utilized here. As for the characters, both are typical, yet very well developed and you really feel like you met them. The relationship between the two is so strong and I like that it ended on a sad note as a happy ending here would have been out of place.

The subplot with Chang definitely feels like it is tacked on suddenly as that literally happened because the director had to fill in space because Leslie Cheung was away and couldn’t film during that time. But even though it does feel far from obligatory, it is still very beautiful and this character is so tragic and I just loved the scenes with him and Lai.

…………………………………………………………….

Happy Together Movie Review…………………………………………………………….

Happy Together is exceptionally well filmed and well paced as well. It is another slow, but deliberately slow paced movie from the director, but it is still very involving and never boring to watch which I admired. But even though the cinematography is strong and I loved its use of black and white and found it to be polished and esthetically pleasing, I still had trouble with its presentation of Argentina as it was portrayed as too poor and dirty. The acting is one of the strongest aspects here with everyone doing a great job, but of course Tony Leung steals the show and delivers another great performance. He truly is a great actor. And I liked that the film was very erotic, but never too much and it was more sensual in quality. It isn’t a great movie, but it most certainly is very good and quite respectable at times.

Happy Together does have a familiar story and characters, but Wong Kar-wai lifted this material with an expectedly terrific direction, the film is emotional and very sensual, I really liked its subplot, the ending was satisfying and it deals with tumultuous relationships and loneliness in a very realistic and heartfelt manner.

The Merry Frolics of Satan (1906)

The Merry Frolics of Satan ReviewThe Merry Frolics of Satan Review

The Merry Frolics of Satan is a 1906 silent short film directed by George Melies. It is an expectedly admirable, fantastical effort from the director.

The only problem here is the plot. I mean the plot itself is quite good, but it isn’t particularly well explained and it should have had some intertitles in it. But regardless of that, it is such a splendid movie that is again ahead of its time. George Melies excels at these kinds of fantastical featurettes and this is no exception. The plot is so wild and imaginative as are its visuals and almost every sequence is just fascinating to watch.

Let’s talk about those magnificent technical aspects. The action and chases are so good as is its humor. But the standout are its special effects which are just unbelievable. I was amazed at some of the stuff that unfolded in front of my eyes. The imagery is superb, the color photography is gorgeous and the set design is just marvelous. The various tricks that he did here paid off as the movie consistently looks great and even groundbreaking and it deserves a lot of praise for centuries to come.

The Merry Frolics of Satan has awesome photography, great sets, imaginative story and such marvelous special effects leading to such a great film.

The Secret of NIMH Movie Review

The Secret of NIMH is a 1982 animated fantasy adventure film directed by Don Bluth and it his first feature film. It isn’t as great as some would call it, but it is a very good work for sure.

………………………………………………….

Courage of the heart is very rare. The stone has a power when it’s there

………………………………………………….

I liked the storyline here quite a bit. Everyone talks about how great this movie’s animation is and it is great, but people forget how great the plot is too. It is fantastic, so unique and incredibly well crafted. I loved its darker and more mature approach as that is the thing that sticks with you the most regarding this movie.

………………………………………………….

2 of 879 Print all In new window The Secret of NIMH Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The great thing about The Secret of NIMH is its mystical nature and the movie has that in abundance. It is so mysterious and at times definitely atmospheric. I loved its structure a lot. It starts on a great note with that opening sequence instantly hooking you into its story, but I loved that it doesn’t explain everything right away and you only get explanations much later on. I also loved that the third act is action packed, but everything that came before it suitably slower and more adventurous than action oriented.

Let’s talk about the characters. The character development is unfortunately the biggest problem this movie never overcomes. The characters here are far from bad as they are perfectly fine, but neither of them is particularly likable or memorable. The film is filled with too many characters, thus not leaving enough room for real characterization and real emotion. Mrs. Brisby is solid and definitely a strong, if a bit boring female protagonist. I liked the role of Jonathan quite a bit. He is never in the movie in any scene, but most of the characters mention him and you feel his importance in the storyline.

………………………………………………….

………………………………………………….

The kids are forgettable, but Auntie Shrew is quite good. The Great Owl is such a mysterious, highly memorable and creepy creation and I loved his sequence a lot. Nicodemus is also very memorable and a great plot device. As for Jeremy the Crow, he is a typical dumb sidekick in the vein of Disney, but he is still a good sidekick whom I honestly liked and found funny at times. As for the other characters, they are okay, but not one of them really stays in your memory.

The Secret of NIMH has a brilliant animation. This is easily one of the best, if not the very best, animated works of the eighties. The animation is fluid, vibrant and always breathtaking to watch. Critics pinpoint to it being the highlight for a good reason as it truly is the best and most admirable thing about the movie. It is wonderfully old-fashioned with traditional character designs, but also some really authentic ones as well. I loved its muted, more darker and more realistic colors and I absolutely loved some of the creepy imagery here. Everything is beautiful to watch and it truly is a stunning, respectable achievement from the animators.

………………………………………………….

The Secret of NIMH has one big problem apart from its characters and that is its emotional investment which isn’t there at all. I never really connected with the characters and I was never moved or touched in any way. It is a dark movie and it should be more serious definitely, bt this was just way too cold for my taste.

Don Bluth directed this movie wonderfully and it is obvious that is one of his very best works, admirable for a debut feature. The movie is also really well paced and I loved its attention to detail with the objects, the exposition and the structure all being extremely well crafted. The action is also phenomenal and that fight near the end is one of my favorite sequences here along with the owl sequence that is the most memorable one in my opinion.

The Secret of NIMH Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The tone is too serious at times, but thankfully Jeremy is there to ease it down from time to time with some comedy. I liked the humor and I really liked the dialogue. I also liked its realism as it truly is very realistic for this kind of film. It works wonderfully as an adventure, but even more so as a fantasy as it is very intriguing in its mythology. It is a very original, really authentic animated film. The score is one of the best aspects here as it is well scored, so dramatic and so atmospheric. Flying Dreams is the only song in this flick and I liked it. It isn’t that memorable, but is well sung with some good lyrics and music. Overall, The Secret of NIMH is such a good, if not great movie that is one of the better animated works of the decade.

The Secret of NIMH has its problems including the troubling lack of emotion in it and too many characters with most of them being not that memorable, but the story is so fantastic and intriguing, the score is superb, the approach is refreshingly darker and more mature, there are some truly powerful and atmospheric sequences here and the animation is exceptional and one of the best of the time. It isn’t great, but it is certainly a very good, very authentic animated film.
