With Poopdeck Pappy ReviewWith Poopdeck Pappy Review

With Poopdeck Pappy is a 1940 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is one of the best Pappy entries for sure.

First, let me say that I’ve never been a big fan of Pappy and having in mind that this is his cartoon, I wasn’t thrilled with it. I also found the pacing here to be weak and some of the action should have been better. But this is still one of the best Pappy parts because he is so well utilized here.

He doesn’t want to sleep and continually sneaks out of bed to Popeye’s frustration. The film emphasizes his immense energy, admirable for his age which is apparently 99. I liked Popeye here quite a bit and some of the situations were excellent including the tavern one which is my favorite. And the ending is pretty sweet. But I still wanted the film to be funnier as it should have been given its promising premise.

With Poopdeck Pappy lacks in the humor department, but it benefits from some very memorable sequences and a very good use of the titular character.

 My Rating – 4
