Goonland is a 1938 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a weird, but interesting episode.
We finally meet Popeye’s father in this cartoon and I have to say that Pappy is a memorable character and the relationship between the two is solid. He is too similar to Popeye, but still not the exact copy. I really liked the ending where he sings as well and it was great watching him use spinach and save his son.
As for the rest of the episode, it is weird. Those goons look weird, but are interesting. As for the action, it isn’t particularly great save for a few good scenes. But the problem here is its running time as the story did not need eight minutes in my opinion and that resulted in a tedious first half. But still it was interesting watching the short focus just on Popeye and his father and it was pretty memorable.
