 Doing Impossikible Stunts is a 1940 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a stupendous entry that took me by surprise.

Here is a Popeye entry that defied my very low expectations in a great manner. I had low expectations because it is a compilation film and we all know how those turn out to be. Well, mostly because this one is, as I said, pretty good. Popeye goes to pitch movie ideas to the director and presents his stunt movies, but Swee’pea ruins everything by playing his movie so they hire him instead.

Yes, that ending is priceless. Swee’pea is a pretty insufferable character, that’s for sure. But when they use him like this and put that to the film’s advantage, he can actually be pretty good. I loved that ending and overall the stunt films chosen were okay and those scenes didn’t last for too long. But the problem lies in the first half as it is executed badly, so slow and dragging. The film definitely should have been shorter and that would have made it more effective.

Doing Impossikible Stunts is a compilation film, but a compilation film done right with a good use of Swee’pea and such a great ending.
