Romancing the Stone Movie Review

Romancing the Stone is a 1984 action adventure romantic comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. It is a pleasant, fun flick.

Joanie, you are now a world-class hopeless romantic.

No, hopeful. Hopeful romantic.

Romancing the Stone Movie Review………………………………………………………..

I really enjoyed this movie. It has everything the Indiana Jones franchise was supposed to have – romance, adventure, charm and a lot of heart. The story itself is pretty solid for this type of movie. Simplistic and typical, yet certainly well crafted and with some memorable plot points and details. The film is very interesting in terms of its tone and genres. It is mostly a fun adventure flick, but it also has action in it and it is definitely a romantic comedy with humor and romance both being very accentuated.

I liked the characters and they were all very likable. It is interesting that this is one of the rare movies where even Michael Douglas I found to be likable as he is usually annoying to me. But he was very good and sympathetic here. Kathleen Turner is excellent and very charming and cute. And of course, as a big Danny DeVito fan, I liked seeing him here a lot and he was quite funny in a couple of scenes.

………………………………………………………..

Romancing the Stone Review………………………………………………………..

Romancing the Stone is very memorable in its third act. Yes, the action there is certainly overwhelming, but better than it was in the middle of the film and some of the set pieces are quite interesting. I liked the use of crocodiles quite a bit and the hand chopping sequence is truly dark for a supposed family picture.

I would have gone without the Columbian stereotypes and really the people and especially its representation as a poor and wild country felt very unnerving and dated. But the romance worked in my opinion as some of the scenes between the two were quite charming and even though the ending was overly happy, it was still endearing and satisfying in a typical eighties fashion.

………………………………………………………..

Romancing the Stone Movie Review………………………………………………………..

It is too much a product of its time, but it also benefits from it as they shot in real locations, Mexico I believe, which led to one fine looking movie with great cinematography and a lot of memorable shots and imagery. The direction from Robert Zemeckis is strong and I think this is one of his earliest movies and he showed great talent and he did deliver with such a strong directorial career. The pacing is somewhat problematic and the movie isn’t always as entertaining as it should have been, but it is always endearing and wonderful to watch plus it is surprisingly well crafted and made for a blockbuster. I liked it a lot and it is one of the best blockbusters of its time and one fine adventurous entertainment.

Romancing the Stone has its flaws such as some stereotypes, sometimes overwhelming action and a somewhat typical and predictable story, but the film is so adventurous and charming with quite likable Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, endearing romance, some very memorable set pieces and shots and a genuinely well crafted, intriguing plot.

Pretty in Pink (1986)

Pretty in Pink Movie Review……………………………………………….

Pretty in Pink Movie Review

Pretty in Pink is a 1986 teen romantic comedy directed by Howard Deutch, written by John Hughes and starring Molly Ringwald. It is a really charming movie.

……………………………………………….

I just want them to know that they didn’t break me.

……………………………………………….

Pretty in Pink Movie Review……………………………………………….

Now, first I have to say that this is nowhere near the quality of ‘The Breakfast Club’ and ‘Sixteen Candles, two movies that I just adore. It is more in line with Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ as the plot is fairly simple and clichéd, but the film does most with it anyway. Some parts of the film weren’t as great and some were even dated, but most were terrific and my favorite has to be the entire third act which was just beautiful to behold. So romantic, charming and it just brought a smile to my face. And the entire movie felt like a pleasant teen journey.

The characters are pretty good, but some parts felt false. The entire conflict that arose between Andie and Jack in that he was too rich for her was just ridiculous and not believable at all. They did the most they could do with it, but it was still somewhat silly. And I have to say that I didn’t care for him that much. Duckie was at first quite annoying and I didn’t know if he was supposed to be gay or nerd or in love with her and the last option came to fruition eventually. Even though the two were obviously better off as friends, I still wished that she chose him instead. But that ending with him telling her to go after him was both funny and endearing.

……………………………………………….

Pretty in Pink Movie Review……………………………………………….

The performances are really good as usual. Harry Dean Stanton is solid and Jon Cryer, though annoying, is quite good in his role. But as usual, Molly Ringwald stole the show as she portrayed such a wonderful character once again and her performance was expectedly great.

Certainly there is something missing in Pretty in Pink and that something is the direction. Howard Deutch is just not John Hughes and although he wrote the script, I wished that he directed the film too as it would have been much better that way.

The film is still competently made, don’t get me wrong. But it is just never as sophisticated as you would come to expect from Hughes’s movies. The script is the major problem as it just felt overly standard and typical. The execution is actually excellent and it thoroughly lifted the material, but I still wished for a couple of more clever lines of dialogue as well as a good conflict.

……………………………………………….

Pretty in Pink Movie Review……………………………………………….

But the humor made Pretty in Pink as enjoyable as it is. It is that kind of wonderful and endearing humor that seems realistic and charming instead of forced and I love that. There are some scenes here that were so heartwarming and funny at the same time that I smiled and laughed and was having such a great time. The silly clothes, the prom and of course the soundtrack all brought that very pleasant 80s tone to it and made it a very moving experience. It is far from a great movie or anything like that, but it is competent and lovable enough that I consider it very good and satisfying for the most part.

Pretty in Pink is lacking in comparison to ‘The Breakfast Club’ and ‘Sixteen Candles’ as the script is fairly typical and the conflict rang false, but it is such a lovable movie that I enjoyed it a lot nevertheless. Molly Ringwald is as likable as ever, the third act was so wonderful and the movie is well acted and made while consistently being endearing in its humor and characters.

Hello, My Name Is Doris (2016)

Hello, My Name Is Doris Movie Review…………………………………………………………

Hello, My Name Is Doris Movie Review

Hello, My Name Is Doris is a 2016 romantic comedy film directed by Michael Showalter and starring Sally Field and Max Greenfield. It is a pleasant indie surprise.

…………………………………………………………

You’re a baller, Doris. Straight up!

…………………………………………………………

Hello, My Name Is Doris Movie Review…………………………………………………………

It is about a woman in her sixties who tries to act on her attraction to a much younger co-worker. I really liked the story here as it actually has a lot going for it, not just the main romance. It was great watching a woman get infatuated with a much younger man as we rarely see that on film. But I admired that it was done tastefully and in a heartwarming instead of exploitative or ridiculous comedic manner.

I also really liked that it focused on other aspects of Doris’s life. She is such a well developed main character that you really get to know her in this movie and get to care for her. Her hoarding problem is so well explored here and it was great watching her deal with it and eventually beat it. But the film’s heart lies in the relationship with her best friend Roz. Those two had some of the most heartwarming moments together and watching Roz console her friend after she’s been rejected was just beautiful to behold. She may not have much that is worthwhile in her life, but her friendship with Roz is certainly something special and I loved how the film showcased the immense importance of such a friendship.

…………………………………………………………

Hello, My Name Is Doris Movie Review…………………………………………………………

I really liked John as well. He was a very likable, charming fellow and it was understandable that she got head over heels for him. He was also really well acted by Max Greenfield who is here more sympathetic than usual. But naturally this is Sally Field’s show and she shines in a very demanding role that could have been awkward, but she restrained it with subtlety and humanity. She gave one of the year’s finest female performances.

Hello, My Name Is Doris is far from a great film as it has a couple of overly ridiculous and theatrical sequences in its first third. That was too aggressive and just plain unfortunate as it really diminished the overall impact of the movie which was more realistic otherwise.

…………………………………………………………

Hello, My Name Is Doris Movie Review…………………………………………………………

But besides that, it doesn’t have all that many flaws and the humor is actually quite solid afterwards. A couple of sequences really made me laugh and its awkward, eccentric humor was quite pleasant. It mostly found the right balance between comical and dramatic/moving which is why it succeeds as both a drama and a comedy. It is quite well directed and also really well edited as there is not a single scene here that is wasted in my opinion. It truly is one of the best indies of the year.

Hello, My Name Is Doris is sometimes too eccentric and goofy, but it mostly found a right balance between comedic and dramatic, Sally Field is fantastic in the main role, her character is so likable and you care for her, the story is really well told and it has many really well done, impactful scenes. It is one of the year’s finest indies.

The Seven Year Itch (1955)

The Seven Year Itch Movie Review………………………………………………………………..

The Seven Year Itch Movie Review

The Seven Year Itch is a 1955 romantic comedy film directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell. It is one of the director’s weakest works.

………………………………………………………………..

When it gets hot like this, you know what I do?

I keep my undies in the icebox!

………………………………………………………………..

The Seven Year Itch Movie Review………………………………………………………………..

It follows a man who is away from his wife and is experiencing the titular psychological term. He meets a beautiful woman and the two hang out and talk for days. The director himself stated that this was “a nothing film” because he couldn’t film it as he should have those days – with a lot of sex and infidelity. But as I usually dislike those, I found this approach satisfying and I really liked that he didn’t cheat on his wife and how the girl actually told him some wise words near the end. I liked that he realized what a fool he was and hurried back to his wife, I liked that their relationship was mostly a fun friendship.

What I didn’t like here is the film’s approach in terms of storytelling. This is one of those movies that is lost potential, it gets half of the scenes right and half very wrong. I was frustrated watching its obvious bad choices unfold in front of my eyes. I am of course talking about the film’s structure and humor.

………………………………………………………………..

The Seven Year Itch Movie Review………………………………………………………………..

The film uses way too many imagination scenes and although they are quite funny and amusing at first, they become annoying as the movie progresses. The same can be said about the protagonist. Richard Sherman is the kind of character that is at first sympathetic and even likable, but he is best used in small doses and here he is at the center of the entire movie and that was just too much and he very quickly got on my nerves. I wished for more Monroe as she was much more sympathetic and memorable.

The other problem, again concerning the structure, is the film’s unwillingness to go into theatrical territory. It should have focused entirely on these two characters and it should have revolved around one room. It is that kind of story and that talkative and narrow approach would have worked wonders here. But unfortunately they put in many other supporting characters and all of them are forgettable and they hurt the movie a lot.

Tom Ewell gives a good performance, but is annoying as a comedian. Marilyn Monroe is as childish and foolish as ever, but it was fascinating watching her give a couple of really smart lines too and she was as amusing and as pretty as ever.

………………………………………………………………..

The Seven Year Itch Movie Review………………………………………………………………..

The comedy in The Seven Year Itch is troublesome. Some of the moments and lines made me laugh and the sexual humor is very funny, but the film is more often than not annoying instead of funny with an excessive use of the protagonist and his dated humor. In fact, the entire film is very dated when you think about it and its age can be seen from the get-go. The pacing is problematic, but the film looks good and the Cinemascope suits it really well and suits its star wonderfully. I liked this film and it was solid, but it was more disappointing than satisfying unfortunately.

The Seven Year Itch is one of those movies that were very contemporary for its time, but are now obviously immensely dated. The film features good performances, a solid relationship between the two stars and is quite funny and charming at times, but it is more annoying than funny with a protagonist that becomes more and more annoying as the film progresses. The movie also should have focused entirely on the two, it should have had a theatrical approach in its production with less characters and the imagination sequences were overly abundant. It is in the end solid and amusing, but a giant mess nonetheless.

Bridget Jones’s Baby (2016)

Bridget Jones's Baby Movie Review…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones’s Baby Movie Review

Bridget Jones’s Baby is a 2016 romantic comedy film starring Renne Zellweger, Colin Firth and Patrick Dempsey. It is a pretty solid, mostly satisfying sequel.

…………………………………………………….

Did you have a threeway?

……………………………………………………

Bridget Jones's Baby Movie Review…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones becomes pregnant and isn’t sure if Mark Darcy of Jack Qwant is the father and of course hilarity ensues. This entry comes somewhere in the middle. It is of course much weaker than ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’, but it is infinitely better than ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’. It is very good as a second sequel in the franchise, but watching it as a single film, it is more than problematic.

The plot is very mediocre in my opinion. Well, at least the conflict is. This whole drama and uncertainty of who the father is definitely was always a stupid idea from Hollywood, not only implausible, but most evidently soapy. The film around this conflict is actually pretty good, but this particular plot is the major one and that is why the movie is so clichéd and ridiculous.

But as I said, its other parts are great. What I particularly liked is how they developed Bridget. She is here very likable, almost as she was in the original film, and she even learned valuable life lessons and progressed as a person which is excellent as it’s realistic for her age. And the whole portrayal of spinster life in the forties was very well portrayed and in a funny manner.

Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth really didn’t age well, particularly her, but they still gave really good performances and Renee Zellweger once again steals the show and was very endearing as usual. But Patrick Dempsey is extremely likable in his role and I really loved how the two men didn’t enter a fight, but actually learned to cooperate. The relationship that formed between the three was ludicrous, but charming.

…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Baby Movie Review…………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones’s Baby isn’t great in terms of storytelling, but in terms of humor, it is more than satisfying as it made me laugh more than a couple of times. Renee’s laugh is contagious and I loved every work scene as those were comedic gems. Miranda in particular is hilarious and some of the interviews she did were just hilarious. And I really liked how she in the end was honest with her boss in a really great dialogue. The film’s ending is too triumphant, but feels earned as it came after three movies. Overall, it could have been much better had it not chosen this ridiculous birth storyline, but it is a pretty stupendous sequel nonetheless.

Bridget Jones’s Baby is very ludicrous and implausible in its major storyline and of course clichéd, but it is still a solid sequel that is overall mostly satisfying thanks to a solid use of its characters, pretty good humor, fine performances and many funny scenes.

My Rating – 3.5

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is a 2004 romantic comedy film starring once again Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. It is the weakest entry in the series.

…………………………………………………………………..

I truly believe that happiness is possible…

even when you’re thirty-three and have a bottom the size of two bowling balls.

…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

I really didn’t like this sequel. ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ is such a good film that this comes as a huge disappointment. It is such a scene by scene rehash of the original with a plot that is basically repeated over and over again. However, most of the charm has gone and the silliness is overabundant.

Bridget Jones herself still could make you laugh here from time to time and is somewhat likable, but even she is a shell of her former self as this version of the character is too cartoony and over-the-top. Zellweger once again gives an excellent performance, but the characterization and the script are both quite silly.

The romance is also gone as I didn’t root for them to get back together as I did the previous time. It just all felt very uninspired and lackluster. Of course Grant’s character is the same as he was before and the story between the two is just repeated which is ridiculous as you think she would have learned by now what to expect from him. Mark is also not as charming as he was in the original and some of their scenes are heartwarming, but most of them felt very typical and they just extended the running time unnecessarily.

…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is admittedly very funny at times with some of the humor being pretty solid and it made me laugh, but most of it is too aggressive and immensely theatrical. The running time is overlong and the film is not only clichéd from beginning to end, but as I said, a pointless remake of sorts. They could have gone in some different, more interesting directions, but they chose the most basic and lazy one and this ended up being such a regular romantic comedy and I mean that in the worst way possible.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is sometimes funny, but is mostly too over-the-top with both its characterization and its plot. It is such a regular romantic comedy and such an incredibly lazy sequel that is basically a scene by scene rehash of the original, but done in a very mediocre and sometimes even annoying manner.

My Rating – 2.5

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones’s Diary Movie Review

Bridget Jones’s Diary is a 2001 romantic comedy film starring Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. It is a surprisingly good romantic comedy flick.

………………………………………………………….

It is a truth universally acknowledged

that when one part of your life starts going okay,

another falls spectacularly to pieces.

………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

This is the kind of film that is a classic romantic comedy meaning that it is entirely predictable from start to finish. She starts dating her boss, but he cheats on her and eventually she ends up with a good man for her who is Hugh Grant’s rival. Even the chase at the end is thoroughly archetypal.

But the film succeeds despite ifs familiarity because it is just so incredibly well executed. Not only are the characters very memorable and the protagonist extremely likable, but the film is both romantic and funny and that is what this genre is supposed to be.

I really liked Bridget Jones as she has such an endearing personality. Renee Zellweger carried the entire movie on her shoulders, delivering a performance that was Oscar-nominated, but she should have won in my opinion. She is simply put wonderful here and the performance and the characterization is so good that you feel like you’ve really met her.

………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

Both Daniel and Mark are typical characters, but they are well developed and I liked the feud that forms between the two. Hugh Grant is absolutely insufferable as he always is, but I shouldn’t blame that on the movie as that’s actually the point here. But Colin Firth is so likable and you root for the two to end up together as they’re such a charming couple.

I really liked the subplot with Jones’s parents. The two are having difficulties, but in the end, she comes back to him in a sequence that is both funny and very heartwarming. Another highlight in terms of the scenes is the last one. It is a cliché for sure, but watching the two hug and kiss on a snowy street is a memorable image to end the movie on. The film takes its time to get there owing to a somewhat less interesting first act, but the rest of it is great.

Bridget Jones’s Diary is very romantic and some sequences are really touching, but never overly emotional. It is done in the best way possible and if all of romantic comedies were this well made, the familiarity of their stories would be forgiven. The humor is terrific and is, along with Zellweger’s performance, the film’s highlight. The central character is very funny, but so are her parents. The film made me laugh a lot of the times and it made me smile almost throughout the whole running time which is why I liked it so much and I really didn’t expect that. It is one of the most stupendous films I’ve seen recently.

………………………………………………………….

Bridget Jones's Diary Review………………………………………………………….

It is well directed and mostly well paced as the film is never boring or rushed. Most of the plot points worked and even though I knew everything that was going to happen, it was so well made that I enjoyed the experience nevertheless. I also have to mention the score. It is the kind of film that uses pop songs and it does that really well as most of the songs are perfectly utilized in the movie and they accompany their scenes fittingly.

It is an entirely predictable movie, but Bridget Jones’s Diary succeeds because it is just so well made. The acting is terrific, the romance is great and the highlights are Zellweger’s performance which is fantastic and should have brought her an Oscar and the humor which is really good and it made me laugh a lot. I knew how it would end, but it was still an enjoyable experience as it was so charming and endearing.

My Rating – 4.5

The Mermaid (2016)

The Mermaid Movie Review…………………………………………………..

The Mermaid Movie Review

The Mermaid is a 2016 Chinese fantasy film directed by Stephen Chow. It is such a good, really well done blockbuster film.

…………………………………………………..

But he isn’t the one whom I hate the most.

I hate you, bitch! Why did you shoot me?

…………………………………………………..

The Mermaid Movie Review…………………………………………………..

It tells the story of a playboy businessman who falls in love with a mermaid who was sent to assassinate him. As my first Chinese blockbuster, The Mermaid was very much satisfying and a great introduction. It definitely deserves its status as the highest-grossing film in China ever. This is the kind of a film that is obviously very familiar in its overall idea and storyline, but so original in many of its plot points and decisions that it becomes original which I appreciated immensely. It is a very interesting, modern retelling of ‘The Little Mermaid’.

It succeeds as a fantasy flick despite very cheesy special effects. I don’t know if they did it on purpose or if it was a budgetary concern, but the visual effects sometimes were borderline silly. However, the film is so well crafted and it tells its story so well that the look of it should be forgiven. Not only is the movie well told and detailed, but also filled with a good message and good intentions. It is an environmentally conscious film with a beautiful message, but it is also a movie that is so innocent in most of its characters, plot and tone that it seemed that it came out in another decade. And that is something most Hollywood blockbusters today do not have which is why The Mermaid was such a pleasant diversion.

Liu Xian is a very good character, if a bit typical. The mermaid herself is also typical, but very charming and endearing and their relationship is well portrayed leading to a solid romantic comedy. Octopus is campy and over-the-top, but so funny. The acting here is definitely not great, but it is serviceable nonetheless.

…………………………………………………..

The Mermaid Movie Review…………………………………………………..

The humor drives this flick. There are a lot of really funny scenes here with the cooking of Octopus being the standout one. That sequence is absolutely hilarious. The same goes for the introductory scene to the mermen and the two protagonists themselves had some really funny moments while mostly having very romantic parts. The film has its too weird or, should I say, odd parts, but most of it is positively wacky and refreshing which is why I’ve had a great time watching it.

The Mermaid has some scenes that are too silly and the special effects are cheesy, but the movie is so positively innocent in its tone, great in its environmental message and so funny in its crazy and over-the-top humor that it was such a refreshing change in pace from American blockbusters.

Café Society (2016)

Café Society Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

Café Society Movie Review

Café Society is a 2016 romantic comedy film directed by Woody Allen and starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Steve Carell. It is an immensely disappointing flick.

The plot follows a young man who moves to 1930s Los Angeles and falls in love with his uncle’s assistant but discovers that the two of them are also having an affair. Needless to say, this movie emphasizes everything that is wrong with Allen and that is mostly his obsession with stupid love triangles and that really was annoying here. The film is just way too soapy to be enjoyed more and way too predictable and slight.

……………………………………………………………..

Life is a comedy written by a sadistic comedy writer

……………………………………………………………..

Café Society Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

The characters are solid, but forgettable. And the actors somehow do not fit in an Allen movie and especially in a period piece. Jesse Eisenberg’s demeanor does fit the usual protagonist’s characterization for Allen, but his speech was too modern. Kristen Stewart gave a pretty good performance and here she continues to show that she actually has acting talent when put in the right project and with the right director. But I wasn’t impressed with Steve Carell at all.

Café Society has gorgeous visuals and that is the only legitimate reason to see this movie. Everything here looks great from the costumes to the cinematography and I really liked the glamorized, nostalgic portrayal of 1930s Hollywood as I myself absolutely adore that period. The score was also very fitting for the period and at times even great. And the film is somewhat well paced.

……………………………………………………………..

Café Society Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

But the name dropping of various actors of the time got on my nerves eventually and that love triangle was just very frustrating along with the narration. The third act did have some interesting dialogue here and there, but for the most part, this movie lacked even in that department, giving you very little of the director’s signature knack for great humor, lines and relationships. Needless to say, I was immensely disappointed with this movie and it further continues this very long stretch of weak projects for the director and I hope that he will make an actually good movie soon.

Café Society has gorgeous visuals and it transports you to its wonderful time period beautifully with great score as well, but the script is soapy, the characters are forgettable and you get very little of the director’s signature humor, dialogue and interesting relationships here. It showcases Allen’s worst tendencies such as style over substance and a strong emphasis on silly love triangles leading to a very disappointing movie.

Alfie (1966)

 Alfie Movie Review……………………………………………………………………………..

Alfie Movie Review

Alfie is a 1966 romantic comedy drama film directed by Lewis Gilbert and starring Michael Caine and Shelley Winters. It is a solid, but very dated movie.

It follows a womanizing man who leads a self-centered life, cheats and disrespects women and only uses them for enjoyment until he is left with nothing and has to reconsider his life. The plot itself is fine, beyond fine actually as it is relevant, especially for the time being, and also very dramatic and hard-hitting. The ending is quite emotional and very strong.

……………………………………………………………………………..

If you lose a bird you can always replace her.

But with a child it’s different

……………………………………………………………………………..

Alfie Movie Review……………………………………………………………………………..

But the problem with this movie is that it is so dated. I get that the women here should be weak as mostly such women would be with a man such as Alfie, but they were still too weak and lacking any will which is why it is a product of its time. But an even bigger problem here is the film’s approach and execution which is artificially hip and “modern”. Whenever you make movies like that, they are going to be very modern for the time being, but in context, years from its release, they will be very dated, much more so than the “traditional” films of that time.

Alfie is a strong character. Very annoying, but is supposed to be like that. Ruby is really good and the only strong female character here and all of the others are forgettable and frustrating. I get that the film deals with a man who is misogynistic, but I got the feeling that the movie itself was sexist at times and that made me angry.

……………………………………………………………………………..

Alfie Movie Review……………………………………………………………………………..

There is so much you can do with a Michael Caine movie for me to like it and this is mostly as far as it gets because I strongly dislike this actor. I never cared for him and I even find him annoying. And he is very annoying here as well. But I have to give him kudos for a very strong performance and this is probably his finest performance to date as he’s never been this good. Shelley Winters is solid herself and all of the other actresses are serviceable.

Let’s talk about Alfie’s defining trait. Its humor and its breaking the fourth wall. I have to say that I usually strongly dislike this style and here I liked it to some extent, but it eventually got on my nerves. The same goes for the humor. The film is sometimes quite funny and even inventive in its humor, but is mostly not particularly funny and is at times repetitive in its breaking the fourth wall.

……………………………………………………………………………..

Alfie Movie Review……………………………………………………………………………..

It is solidly directed and mostly well paced. But the cinematography is quite uninspired and nothing here stands out in terms of the shots and camera angles. The score is good and the titular song is admittedly quite good. The dialogue is mostly commendable and I liked its strong emotion near the end. Of its nominations, I would say that only Best Actor and Best Song nods were deserved with the others not so much.

Alfie is a solid, yet very dated movie. It has a good performance from Michael Caine, it has strong emotion near the end, it is a relevant story and it has solid dialogue, but its humor is so-so, its breaking the fourth wall got on my nerves eventually and the film is undoubtedly a product of its time.

My Rating – 3.5
