Howl’s Moving Castle Movie Review

Howl’s Moving Castle is a 2004 fantasy anime film directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is far from the best that Studio Ghibli has to offer, but still a solid film in its own right.

………………………………………………….

I don’t cook!

I’m a scary and powerful fire demon!

………………………………………………….

Howl's Moving Castle Movie Review

………………………………………………….

I actually liked this one much more upon second viewing as I really did not care for it the first time around. But watching it now, I could certainly appreciate it more. The storyline is admittedly quite good and I particularly loved that it is an alternative historical film. This is early 20th century for sure, but with magic added as a bonus.

The story is fascinating, magical, endearing and as imaginative as you would come to expect from the studio. I loved the magical elements and I really liked some of its themes with aging being particularly well explored.

However, the major problem I’ve had with it is that it is undercooked. The narrative is very problematic as it doesn’t give us too many answers to some really crucial questions such as whether or not Sophie is a witch, Howl’s origin story is left unexplored as is his entire relationship with Suliman.

………………………………………………….

Howl's Moving Castle Movie Review

………………………………………………….

To me the film just happened and it gave us way too many characters and way too many plot points that some were seriously shortchanged. That is the problem of the script but also of the action as the runtime is more than long enough for it to develop properly. But the action is frequently quite overwhelming that we do not get to spend enough time with some characters and story points.

I liked Sophie quite a bit. She has excellent development and growth in this film and is a likable protagonist for whom you root for. Howl is also very good and interesting as this man obsessed with looks and young age. The relationship between the two is moving and one of the film’s highlights.

The Witch of the Waste is excellent and I ended up liking her quite a bit. Underutilized for sure, but she is at first excellent and memorable as a villain and then quite sweet as their companion. Calcifer is a cartoon character in his appeal and design, but a good one nevertheless and having fire literally be a character was interesting and he was so well animated and very endearing.

………………………………………………….

Howl's Moving Castle Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Markl is sweet, but entirely underutilized unfortunately. But his relationship with Sophie is heartwarming. Madame Suliman is memorable as the film’s greatest villain, but once again entirely underdeveloped. The voice acting is superb and everyone did a great job across the board.

Howl’s Moving Castle features brilliant animation. Yes, that is certainly one of the standout aspects here. I loved seeing for once the early 20th century in a fantasy flick and the attention to detail is so meticulous that I was transported to that era from the first moment. The costumes look great, the hairstyles, the various imagery is highly interesting and in particular the interiors looked awesome with the castle itself being so well imagined. This anime surely is beautiful to look at.

To me the highlight in terms of the scenes was the beginning and especially the transformation scene which was very intriguing and wonderfully reminded me of fairy tales. The film is very much a Japanese fairy tale which I loved of course. The ending with the imposed end credits was not my cup of tea, but each scene in the house was wonderful and Howl and Sophie’s scenes were all heartwarming.

Howl's Moving Castle Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The action is very well executed even though it is overwhelming. The pacing is frenetic for sure and the film should have been much calmer as its runtime demanded it. Miyazaki’s direction and vision are reliably strong, but he was influenced by ‘Spirited Away’ a bit too much and the film never is comparable to it. The score is also not as memorable as some other scores from the studio. In the end, I liked the film, but it is way too flawed to be considered in the top half with Ghibli’s biggest classics.

Howl’s Moving Castle is admittedly much better upon second viewing and it features excellent world building and attention to detail. I really liked its historical period and the magical elements. The two main characters and their relationship are strong and the animation is magnificent and beautiful to look at. But this is still one of the more flawed Ghibli films with overwhelming action and a problematic narrative that leaves too many things unanswered and too many characters underutilized. Miyazaki was influenced by his ‘Spirited Away’ a bit too much and this is obviously a pale imitation of that classic film.

Alien vs. Predator (2004)

Alien vs. Predator Movie Review

…………………………………………………

Alien vs. Predator Movie Review

Alien vs. Predator is a 2004 science fiction action film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. It is a fun, though exceedingly silly endeavor.

………………………………………………….

It’s a bomb. Well, I hope it kills every fucking one of ’em!

………………………………………………….

Alien vs. Predator Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The critics should not be reviewing blockbuster movies like this one. Certainly AVP is not that good and it is ridiculous when you think about it, but it isn’t a bad movie, at least it wasn’t for me. That’s because the movie is extremely entertaining and that was its main purpose which it fulfilled so that is why I give it a slight edge to the fresh territory unlike Rotten Tomatoes.

Now I really enjoyed that first act, really well done. The movie started in such an intriguing, adventurous manner with no action sequence in sight which was unexpected and ultimately it led to a rewarding, positive experience. It was well setup, it looked good and I loved the Antarctic setting which was beautiful to follow and original for the series.

But then it went to typical action territory for better and for worse. The action sequences should have been better executed for sure, but they were still mostly fun and watching these two creatures clash against each other was definitely very entertaining.

That is why I don’t understand the emphasis on humans for more than half of the picture. I came for Aliens and Predators and I got humans which was a stupid choice made all the worse by their bland and poor characters with no personalities in sight.

………………………………………………….

Alien vs. Predator Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The acting is also not the greatest, I have to say. The actors and actresses look good physically and that is the only positive thing I can say about them. As for Alexa, her befriending one Predator and them taking on Aliens together was definitely a lot of fun to watch, but still way too silly to be taken seriously. The entire movie is awfully silly and although mostly it was positively ridiculous and done for fun, I still had a problem with its logic.

AVP is not well directed and acted at all, the pacing is so-so and the film has a weaker dialogue. But the special effects are very good and the set designs are particularly effective and memorable. The film is quite atmospheric at times.

Alien vs. Predator is of course not a great movie, but it isn’t bad as the critics say either. This is a silly blockbuster that was meant to entertain and it did just that as it was hugely entertaining to me so it ultimately succeeded in what it was trying to do. The action was not greatly executed, the humans are bland and some plot points are surely ridiculous in their lack of logic, but the movie is still fun from start to finish and with a particularly strong, atmospheric first act accompanied by memorable set designs and a great use of its intriguing Antarctic setting.

Blade: Trinity (2004)

Blade: Trinity Movie Review

…………………………………………………

Blade: Trinity Movie Review

Blade: Trinity is a 2004 superhero film directed by David S. Goyer and starring Wesley Snipes and Ryan Reynolds. It is a weak conclusion to the trilogy.

………………………………………………….

Oh, fuck me sideways!

………………………………………………….

Blade: Trinity Movie Review

………………………………………………….

David Goyer’s inclusion of course led to the worst entry in the franchise as he is such an untalented individual. And surely not only ‘Blade II’ but also ‘Blade’ is much better than Trinity owing to much better action for instance.

The action here is pretty uninspired with only some scenes being okay but most are dull and not all that well executed and nowhere near as exciting as its predecessor’s. Definitely the direction is problematic here and I wish that they brought a different director.

I also found its plot and characterization as weak and as forgettable as is usual for this series but this time around it is even weaker than before as it is overly convoluted and not entertaining at all.

The film also doesn’t know what it wants to be as it is sometimes overly serious with too much gore and violence and sometimes it is ridiculously campy and silly. The tone surely is all  over the place in this one. Technically and script-wise, the film fails on every level.

………………………………………………….

Blade: Trinity Movie Review

………………………………………………….

But Blade: Trinity isn’t terrible and is mediocre as it has its fun scenes and mainly because of the welcome presence of Ryan Reynolds who is here nowhere near as memorable as he was in ‘Deadpool’, but he is similar to his role in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. He is energetic, fun and funny and he brought the necessary energy and humor to an otherwise bland movie which is easily the worst in the franchise and of course it killed the whole franchise with one punch.

The presence of pre-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds is quite welcome as he brought humor and energy to an otherwise bland and dull movie. Blade: Trinity has weak action, story and problematic tone and David Goyer definitely destroyed the film and the entire franchise.

Home on the Range (2004)

Home on the Range Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range Movie Review

Home on the Range is a 2004 animated musical western comedy film which is the 45th Disney animated feature film and one of their weakest.

………………………………………………….

Call me crazy, but I think these cows got it in for me!

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range Movie Review

………………………………………………….

This is one of those films that are perfect for kids and I could see myself loving it as a child. I do think that kids should see it regardless what adults think and yes, adults are harsh to it. A bit too harsh if you ask me. Yes, it is one of the worst films to come from Disney Animation Studios, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad as even the weakest Disney flicks are passable and okay as is the case with this one too.

The film is a comedy for sure and it is a musical owing to an abundance of songs, but more importantly it is a western film and that is rare for animation which is why I loved those elements here. ‘Spirit’ from DreamWorks is certainly an infinitely better western film, but this one manages to recreate the 1890s period really well thanks to solid imagery and good southern accents.

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The plot itself certainly takes the backseat to all of the action which is a big problem but it has its moments such as a memorable villain, somewhat well executed last chase and a wonderful ending that is emotionally resonant and sweet. But yes, the film is way too short in its running time to be having this much action in it.

Home on the Range features solid characters in my opinion. Not the greatest, but not bad either. I really liked the dynamic between the three cows and they serve as solid protagonists. Grace is somewhat typical, but Mrs. Caloway is charming and Maggie is quite good, though over-the-top at times. The relationship between the two is the strongest in the film and the casting of Judi Dench and Roseanne Barr certainly helped the movie a lot as they’re great.

Buck is annoying, I have to say. He is one of those sidekicks that only kids could like and to the rest of us, he is actually a waste of time here. Lucky Jack also wasn’t all that memorable and those two henchmen had some good moments, but were ultimately 101 Disney henchmen a bit too much. But I have to say that I really like Alameda Slim. He is a good mix of competent and goofy villain and I loved his singing and that it was used as a weapon. That needed to happen at some point in all these Disney musicals.

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range has one of the worst animations ever for Disney. I really did not care for it and it brought the whole movie down significantly. It does have some good details and, as I said, the period is recreated rather well, but the only standout scene is the villain song and the rest are forgettable and actually kind of cheap. Not only does the whole movie look too garish in its colors, but also quite unappealing in its characters as their angular designs are rather off-putting. That is something that ‘Hercules’ did well, but this one fails in my opinion.

Easily the standout aspect of the entire film is its soundtrack and the only truly good thing about it. I really liked it and these songs are very underrated in my opinion as they are not only a lot of fun, but refreshingly different in their country genre and fitting to the tone and setting of the film.

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range Movie Review

………………………………………………….

The titular opening number is actually incredibly entertaining and a good opening for a western film, very fitting to its style and I always say that I love when these films pay attention to its time period and setting which this one did tremendously. Will the Sun Ever Shine Again is very much the same case as with No Way Out from ‘Brother Bear’. It is just not needed as we can see the emotions ourselves and we don’t need the song to spell it out for us. Certainly the weakest song here.

Little Patch of Heaven is so good. Again very fitting in style, so well sung and with fine and charming descriptive lyrics, it succeeds as a very endearing and catchy country song and a very good theme for the entire film. Of course the highlight is Yodel-Adle-Eedle-Idle-Oo. I love this song so much and it is one of the best from Disney’s Second Dark Age. As I said above, it is a very effective scene for our villain and the greatest moment in the entire film, but I just love yodeling so I naturally loved this song as well. Again fitting to the film, it has good lyrics and the tune is just so damn catchy and the visuals are so psychedelic that you gotta love it.

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range Movie Review

………………………………………………….

Home on the Range is definitely too short and actually not all that engaging for that short a running time which is a big problem. The direction is quite weak but at least the performances are good. The dialogue is nothing to write home about too. In the end, it is in my opinion the ‘Oliver & Company’ from the 2000s – a Disney flick which is fun and with a great soundtrack, but so weak in almost every other way that it’s one of the company’s worst movies.

Home on the Range is definitely one of Disney’s weakest films owing to a standard plot, way too much action for its short running time, forgettable supporting characters and garish animation with unappealing character designs. But it is still not a bad movie as it is very good for kids owing to its cartoony and goofy approach, it has good performances and fine protagonists plus its country soundtrack is a lot of fun and quite underrated in its own right.

Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls Movie Review………………………………………………………

Mean Girls Movie Review

Mean Girls is a 2004 teen comedy film starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey among others. It is such an entertaining flick.

………………………………………………………

I’m sorry that people are so jealous of me…

but I can’t help it that I’m popular.

………………………………………………………

Mean Girls Movie Review………………………………………………………

The story here is very predictable and clichéd. There isn’t anything new here whatsoever. True, it does explore girl high school cliques and it does have a great message, showing you how damaging those can be for girls. But the overall plot was very simple, very familiar and I guessed correctly what would happen almost every time.

But the characters make Mean Girls so memorable. Cady is truly fantastic and I loved her progression from a good girl to a mean one to just being a human being. I thought she was the most realistic and relatable person here. Regina George is your typical over-the-top villain, but she was as good as this character can be. Gretchen was the weakest among them, although funny at times. But Karen is very funny and she is also very likable.

The film is very diverse and it features both black and Asian students, but none of them play a major part and as for the gay character, I found Damian to be awfully stereotypical, but I guess you would find such a person in this group and in that way it was realistic plus he had some funny scenes.

………………………………………………………

Mean Girls Movie Review………………………………………………………

Janis is very sympathetic and I really liked all of the teachers as well with Norbury naturally being the highlight. I found the principal quite typical, but he had some memorable sequences. That is great about this movie – most of the characters have their moments and most delivery in terms of the humor.

The acting is excellent and is actually its strongest suit. Amanda Seyfried made her debut in this movie and she instantly made it count, delivering with a performance that features both heart and humor. Tina Fey is expectedly good, but Rachel McAdams is excellent in one of her earliest roles as well. It’s great watching this movie and seeing all of these actresses at the start of their careers and all did a great job. Lindsay Lohan is easily the highlight, so good here and actually quite stupendous at times, delivering a genuinely strong performance in such a good role.

………………………………………………………

Mean Girls Movie Review………………………………………………………

The humor is, as I said, really good. To me this film isn’t as funny or as good overall as ‘Clueless’ and it is rarely genuinely hilarious, but it is more often than not very funny and of course most of the characters deliver with some great snappy lines of dialogue. It’s a shame that the ending is so typically emotional and dramatic, but most of the movie was lightweight and funny instead of dramatic and I liked that. The dialogue is of course very good here and the movie is quite quotable. Again, not as quotable as ‘Clueless’ is, but still pretty good in its own right with a couple of very recognizable and amusing lines. The film is also well paced and entertaining from start to finish. Thanks to all of its strong technical aspects and humor, it manages to transcend its very predictable and familiar storyline. But I’ve just had a lot of fun watching this flick and I laughed more than a couple of times and found it to be overall very realistic, if a bit too over-the-top in a typical genre manner.

Mean Girls is such an entertaining teen comedy that transcends its familiar and predictable storyline and sometimes over-the-top approach with genuinely strong humor, excellent performances from Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams in particular and mostly realistic characters of whom almost all had their moment to shine.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004)

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is a 2004 romantic comedy film starring once again Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. It is the weakest entry in the series.

…………………………………………………………………..

I truly believe that happiness is possible…

even when you’re thirty-three and have a bottom the size of two bowling balls.

…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

I really didn’t like this sequel. ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ is such a good film that this comes as a huge disappointment. It is such a scene by scene rehash of the original with a plot that is basically repeated over and over again. However, most of the charm has gone and the silliness is overabundant.

Bridget Jones herself still could make you laugh here from time to time and is somewhat likable, but even she is a shell of her former self as this version of the character is too cartoony and over-the-top. Zellweger once again gives an excellent performance, but the characterization and the script are both quite silly.

The romance is also gone as I didn’t root for them to get back together as I did the previous time. It just all felt very uninspired and lackluster. Of course Grant’s character is the same as he was before and the story between the two is just repeated which is ridiculous as you think she would have learned by now what to expect from him. Mark is also not as charming as he was in the original and some of their scenes are heartwarming, but most of them felt very typical and they just extended the running time unnecessarily.

…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is admittedly very funny at times with some of the humor being pretty solid and it made me laugh, but most of it is too aggressive and immensely theatrical. The running time is overlong and the film is not only clichéd from beginning to end, but as I said, a pointless remake of sorts. They could have gone in some different, more interesting directions, but they chose the most basic and lazy one and this ended up being such a regular romantic comedy and I mean that in the worst way possible.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is sometimes funny, but is mostly too over-the-top with both its characterization and its plot. It is such a regular romantic comedy and such an incredibly lazy sequel that is basically a scene by scene rehash of the original, but done in a very mediocre and sometimes even annoying manner.

The Passion of the Christ (2004)

The Passion of the Christ Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

The Passion of the Christ Movie Review

The Passion of the Christ is a 2004 historical drama film directed by Mel Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel. It is a controversial film that polarized me as well.

…………………………………………………………………….

Forgive them, Father. They know not what they do

…………………………………………………………………….

The Passion of the Christ Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

It depicts the last days of Jesus, but mostly focuses on his torture. And there naturally lies a problem. Let me elaborate on this. While I honestly admire the film for showing his torture as in this case it should be showed because it is so important and thus it achieves realism, I still disliked its immense violence and found it to be needless. The film should be violent, but not this violent as it crossed the line for me as was the case with many people.

But the bigger problem is that the film relies too much on that torture and rarely deals with other aspects of the story which is why it is such an oddity. I wouldn’t call it a documentary, but I certainly wouldn’t call it a live-action movie either. His trial and torture should have been emphasized, but the film should have never become just that and thus it lacks in terms of the storytelling, emotion and message.

Yes, The Passion of the Christ is far from a religious movie. And it is certainly not a good thing when you make a movie about Jesus and not make it religious. There are some religious overtones here for sure and they are mostly well handled, but those still came few and far between. It needed a strong message about tolerance and love instead of honestly being too hateful at times. And I never felt anything spiritual in it.

…………………………………………………………………….

The Passion of the Christ Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

The acting is really strong, but I still found the actor choice to be troublesome as both the actor and the characterization felt wrong and too harsh for a man that should be calmer and gentler. But everyone did give a pretty good performance which is commendable as they spoke in dead languages.

And now we come to the best part of this movie, the one that is the most admirable aspect of it and that is its usage of dead languages – Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew. I just adored that as usually bit Hollywood productions like this tend to use English, but this one used the correct languages and it felt all the more real for it.

And surely all of the technical aspects in The Passion are splendid. The photography is really good as are the make-up effects. The costumes are authentic for the time period and the actors felt like real people from that time. The direction from Gibson is expectedly strong and the film is overall really well made.

…………………………………………………………………….

The Passion of the Christ Movie Review…………………………………………………………………….

I liked the dialogue in it and the pacing is mostly good, but the flashback structure was frankly clichéd and annoying. It wasn’t a good approach at all. The tone is too hateful instead of being optimistic, at least in its ending. It is a giant hate letter to all mankind, but the emphasis is on the word hate and it never makes a statement or teaches you something. It is a very authentic and sometimes admirable movie, but it is also too violent and too slight to be enjoyed more. It left a polarizing effect on me as I neither hate it nor love it.

The Passion of the Christ is a very polarizing movie. On the one hand, you’ve got awesome technical aspects from the costumes to the acting to the direction and of course the use of original languages is so commendable. On the other hand, you have a movie that is realistic in its violence, but still too violent to the point of being exploitative. But the biggest problem is its hateful tone, a lack of a strong story and the movie’s unwillingness to make a strong statement or to have anything truly spiritual in it as the movie about Jesus needs those things. So in the end, I respect it to some degree as it is authentic, but I also find it to be too problematic in too many areas.

Hellboy (2004)

Hellboy Movie Review………………………………………………………………………

Hellboy Movie Review

Hellboy is a 2004 superhero film directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman and Jeffrey Tambor. It is a very disappointing, middling effort from the director.

………………………………………………………………………

My uncle used to say that we like people for their qualities,

but we love them for their defects

………………………………………………………………………

Hellboy Movie Review………………………………………………………………………

It is about a demonic beast turned superhero who secretly works to help the world safe from paranormal threats with his team. The premise is admittedly fun, but the execution of it isn’t. I just was never invested in this movie which is weird for me as it obviously has every hallmark of the director including the gothic elements and the great visuals. But I just never found either of its plot points, characters and the whole mythology that fascinating.

The move is also not only lacking in terms of the themes and emotion, but it is also never as entertaining as it thinks it is. There is too much action in its second half which is why I preferred the first one that started with a very intriguing opening that was also unusually long, clocking in at about 15 minutes before the actual credits. But everything that came after it never delivered on that great opening and we are left with broken promises and lost potential.

………………………………………………………………………

Hellboy Movie Review………………………………………………………………………

The titular character is quite well developed, but unfortunately all of the others were very forgettable. His relationship with Liz is solid, but Liz herself is never particularly likable or memorable. Abe is an interesting creature and he had some great scenes, but was ultimately underutilized. This isn’t Jeffrey Tambor’s greatest performance, but at least Ron Perlman is pretty good and capable in his role and all of the others are solid.

Hellboy’s humor is disappointing and never as great as everyone says it is. The action is also fairly forgettable and mostly not that well executed. The same goes for the dialogue and its themes. It is a thematically empty movie and although some lines are solid, most of them do not amaze. The direction from Guillermo del Toro is solid and he does deliver in some areas, but this is still one of his weakest films to date.

Hellboy is a technically excellent film and its visuals are easily the best thing about it. I never found the effects to be particularly great, but the creature designs are all excellent and the film looks really good, is well filmed and has a great gothic style to it that really appealed to me. I would have liked for it to have been more gothic not just in visuals, but at least visually speaking, it is great and the cinematography and score are both solid.

………………………………………………………………………

Hellboy Movie Review………………………………………………………………………

The pacing is not great and the film is overlong and unfortunately not investing at all. There are some pretty entertaining sequences, but for the most part, the movie is surprisingly devoid of any sense of fun or excitement, not to mention that it lacks in action and fantasy elements too. It is definitely different and somewhat unique, but the mythology is either uninteresting or underutilized and it ended up being a huge disappointment and such a middling effort from a great director.

Hellboy is visually arresting with a great gothic style to it, but the characters aren’t memorable, the mythology isn’t particularly interesting and the action is underwhelming. It has its moments, the main character is good and the film is well made, but it is never that entertaining or exciting and it is one of del Toro’s weakest efforts.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Million Dollar Baby Movie Review

Million Dollar Baby is a 2004 drama film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring himself alongside Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank. It is such a great, really powerful film.

Maggie always did like taking ’em out in the first round

……………………………………………….

It is about a boxing trainer who helps an amateur boxer become a professional. Let’s just say that I usually dislike boxing movies, but this movie I really loved because it is so much more than a mere sports flick. It is above all a moving, very sophisticated drama that benefits from some excellent character work and some great themes. It deals with euthanasia, mistakes from the past as well as grief in such a phenomenal way and it is such an involving, really well done story.

……………………………………………….

Million Dollar Baby Movie Review

……………………………………………….

The characters are fantastic. The character development in Million Dollar Baby is exceptionally strong. To me, Frankie is the main character and he is such a fascinating, nuanced and realistic character. His problems are all really well dealt with and his relationship with Maggie is the heart and soul of the movie. Speaking of Maggie, she is very likable and you root for her throughout the whole flick. And Eddie is simply great as he interacts with both of them wonderfully and is such an endearing person.

The acting is absolutely fantastic. All three of these actors are typecast and although that bothered me at first, I came to really respect their work here as all three of them gave magnificent performances. Hilary Swank gave one of her best performances here and is constantly great. The same goes for Morgan Freeman who is really wonderful here. As for Clint Eastwood, the same goes for him as well. He gave probably the best performance of his career in this movie, playing such a complex and strong character.

……………………………………………….

Million Dollar Baby Movie Review

……………………………………………….

Million Dollar Baby succeeds as a sports movie because the sports scenes here are really well executed and I was quite invested in them despite me disliking this sport. But it succeeds as a drama most because it is so well written with such a phenomenal, really sophisticated screenplay. As for melodrama, I liked that quite a bit here and it really is a devastating, incredibly sad movie that is one of the most heartbreaking films of the decade. However, I found that the movie was a bit too depressing and difficult to watch during its third act and the ending was also dragged out in my opinion.

Clint Eastwood’s directing here is just fantastic and this is such a superbly directed work. The acting is top-notch and the score I loved as it was quite moving at times. The pacing is also quite solid, though the ending should have been shorter. The movie is also pretty engaging except for the beginning which isn’t. Its emotion is for the most part well handled. It does go into overly maudlin territory in its ending, but that ending is also genuinely moving and powerful. The dialogue is terrific, the script is stellar and the film is overall really well made.

……………………………………………….

Million Dollar Baby Movie Review

……………………………………………….

The film received seven Oscar nominations and it won for Best Picture most deservedly. In fact, this is one of the most deserved Best Picture winners of the decade without a doubt. Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank both deserved their Oscars and Eastwood’s win for directing is certainly justifiable as he did such a great job here. And of its three nominations, all three are very much deserved. It truly is a powerful, very good movie that really surprised me not only with its quality, but also with its script, emotion and entertainment value as it really is so involving to watch. It is one of the finest films of 2004 for sure.

Million Dollar Baby is too depressing, but mostly very powerful in its emotion and so well written with a superb script. Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank all gave amazing performances, their characters are so well developed, the drama here is incredibly engaging and moving to watch, the score is great and the directing is fantastic. It is such a stupendous movie that is one of the most deserved Best Picture winners of the decade.

Teacher’s Pet (2004)

Teacher's Pet Movie Review

Teacher’s Pet Movie Review

Teacher’s Pet is a 2004 animated musical comedy film directed by Timothy Bjorklund and starring Nathan Lane. It is such a weak, problematic animated flick from Disney.

………………………………………………

What is it with this family and singing?

I’m starting to feel a little VonTrapped

………………………………………………

The movie is based on the TV show of the same name. Before I say anything else, I have to confess that I haven’t watched this show and I am obviously not a fan of it. That is one of the reasons why I wasn’t a fan of this movie at all. The biggest problem for me is that Teacher’s Pet obviously looks like a TV episode and never like an actual movie. Everything here is so weak and subpar that I felt as if I was watching some episode and a low-quality one at that.

………………………………………………

Teacher's Pet Movie Review

The characters are mostly either forgettable or annoying and I liked Nathan Lane’s performance, but most of the others are pretty weak. I never really cared for any of these characters which was a big problem for me as I couldn’t even get invested in its story as well.

The animation of Teacher’s Pet is its major weakness. I really, really disliked it. Everything about it screams TV and low-budget one at that. The colors are not smooth and its visuals are never polished. The character design is my major concern. I just found it to be horrendous and so unlikable at every level. Wow, the characters are really ugly in this one.

Teacher's Pet Movie Review

Let’s talk about the music. It is one of the better aspects of this movie. Yes, not one of the songs is great, but at least they aren’t bad and some are okay. All of the numbers here are okay for this type of movie and not at all terrible. And the film overall has its sweet and fun scenes and I totally understand why people would love it, but this is just not for me to be honest and I never could get into it and I was bored by it.

Teacher's Pet Movie Review

Teacher’s Pet also has a weak humor that I never really found to be good as I never laughed, not even once. It is a typical modern humor of a typical Disney series that I am not a fan of. It is solidly paced and acted, but still too boring to me.

Teacher’s Pet does have its fine scenes and it’s solidly acted, but I still never found its story or characters to be interesting whatsoever and it is a typical movie based on a TV show with such low-quality animation and just horrendous character designs. I understand that some may like it, but it just wasn’t for me.

My Rating – 2.5
