Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is a 2004 romantic comedy film starring once again Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. It is the weakest entry in the series.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

I really didn’t like this sequel. ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ is such a good film that this comes as a huge disappointment. It is such a scene by scene rehash of the original with a plot that is basically repeated over and over again. However, most of the charm has gone and the silliness is overabundant.

Bridget Jones herself still could make you laugh here from time to time and is somewhat likable, but even she is a shell of her former self as this version of the character is too cartoony and over-the-top. Zellweger once again gives an excellent performance, but the characterization and the script are both quite silly.

The romance is also gone as I didn’t root for them to get back together as I did the previous time. It just all felt very uninspired and lackluster. Of course Grant’s character is the same as he was before and the story between the two is just repeated which is ridiculous as you think she would have learned by now what to expect from him. Mark is also not as charming as he was in the original and some of their scenes are heartwarming, but most of them felt very typical and they just extended the running time unnecessarily.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason Movie Review…………………………………………………………………..

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is admittedly very funny at times with some of the humor being pretty solid and it made me laugh, but most of it is too aggressive and immensely theatrical. The running time is overlong and the film is not only clichéd from beginning to end, but as I said, a pointless remake of sorts. They could have gone in some different, more interesting directions, but they chose the most basic and lazy one and this ended up being such a regular romantic comedy and I mean that in the worst way possible.

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is sometimes funny, but is mostly too over-the-top with both its characterization and its plot. It is such a regular romantic comedy and such an incredibly lazy sequel that is basically a scene by scene rehash of the original, but done in a very mediocre and sometimes even annoying manner.

My Rating – 2.5
