An Inconvenient Truth Movie Review

An Inconvenient Truth is a 2006 documentary film directed by Davis Guggenheim and starring and written by Al Gore. It is one of the most overrated documentaries.

I really disliked this film and for many obvious reasons, at least they were obvious to me. It is obviously good meaning with a good message and a respectable goal, but I just couldn’t get into it mainly because it felt overly aggressive in tone. It was made to scare people more than to help every one of us and this entire subject matter has been proven time and time again to be exaggerated for hysteria. Some statements here were just false or repetitive or definitely overly emphasized for dramatic effect.

Al Gore is another reason why to me An Inconvenient Truth fell apart. I just could not accept this choice for him to be the center of the movie at all. I do not blame the director as maybe Davis Guggenheim would have done a better job with someone else, but with Al Gore it proved to be disastrous. For one, he talks about polluting Earth and blames everyone and is a self-proclaimed environmental activist and yet he drives expensive cars and planes and does contribute to polluting himself.

Another problem is that he just isn’t a scientist. The movie would have been much better had it focused on real science and spoken by a real scientist who knows what he’s talking about and not some environmentally conscious politician. And I’ve also had a feeling that he wasn’t particularly honest and something felt off in his speeches. Maybe this was his carefully choreographed step for a major political goal, I don’t know. But he just seemed dishonest here.

And the final and biggest problem the film has is its awful technicalities. It is basically one giant slideshow of pictures, there isn’t any direction, or cinematography or good editing to be had here whatsoever. Certainly nothing artistic or cinematic and that is my major gripe with it and why I think it thoroughly did not deserve its Oscar for Best Documentary.

An Inconvenient Truth means well and presents a good goal, but that is all I can say that is good about it. It is otherwise an immensely overrated, frustrating movie that put Al Gore at the center of it which is a choice that is bad for many reasons and it is just a technically awful movie (consisting of basically one giant slideshow) that did not deserve its Oscar at all.

My Rating – 2.5
