Buddy’s Beer Garden (1933)

Buddy's Beer Garden ReviewBuddy’s Beer Garden Review

Buddy’s Beer Garden is a 1933 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a pretty solid, entertaining short.

The setting is certainly far from original, but is still surprisingly well utilized. I loved that it was filled with many gags and action scenes as most were a lot of fun. I thought that the film was certainly overlong, unoriginal and never truly hilarious, but it was still overall very satisfying.

Cookie wasn’t here a lot unfortunately, but the dog is well utilized, that brute is memorable and Buddy is quite likable here. Of the highlights, I loved the entire last sequence. Yes, Mae West being parodied once again definitely felt repetitive, but it was still very amusing and I loved that she turned out to be Buddy cross-dressing. That was a great way to end the cartoon. I also really liked its animation and some of the visual gags concerning beer serving were quite inventive.

Buddy’s Beer Garden isn’t original, but it is pretty solid nonetheless with some great scenes and a good use of Buddy.

Splendor in the Grass (1961)

Splendor in the Grass Movie Review……………………………………………………….

Splendor in the Grass Movie Review

Splendor in the Grass is a 1961 romantic drama film directed by Elia Kazan and starring Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty. It is one of the best films of its year.

……………………………………………………….

Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass,

glory in the flower,

we will grieve not; rather find strength in what remains behind

……………………………………………………….

Splendor in the Grass Movie Review……………………………………………………….

Splendor in the Grass reminded me of ‘Picnic’ which deals with a similar subject matter and both are truly great movies. The film is set in 1928 and follows a girl who suffers from a nervous breakdown after her boyfriend cheated on her and did not want to have sex with her. The movie treats its issue in such a deep, tragic way and you really feel empathy for its characters.

Of course the time and place were simply too conservative, but sexual repression unfortunately was an issue until quite recently. I felt that myself a couple of times in my life which is why this movie was so relatable to me personally. It showcases the problems of society and how it treats sexuality as a taboo when it is a beautiful thing while also showing us how terrible parents can be when it comes to raising their kids.

Deannie is a wonderful protagonist who is tragic, but has a genuine arc and plot progression as she ends up becoming smarter and much more mature which was wonderful to witness. Bud is also a sympathetic character and the relationship between the two was beautiful and seeing them get separated was heartbreaking in that touching ending. His sister is another tragic, bold and different character. Of course her mother is such a realistic character depicted in a grounded in reality manner and his father is also painfully realistic. These two are responsible for ruining their kids’ lives and it was difficult watching them succeed in it.

……………………………………………………….

Splendor in the Grass Movie Review……………………………………………………….

The film is superbly acted all around, but Natalie Wood is truly a standout actress here. Warren Beatty is also really good, but just not as great as she was here. She entirely deserved her Oscar nomination (the film also deserved to win for Best Original Screenplay and it should have been nominated for Best Picture) as her performance is powerful and especially admirable for her young age.

Splendor in the Grass is extremely sensual owing to the main actors’ evident appeal. Warren is handsome and Natalie is beautiful and charming. Together, they share some pretty steamy scenes for its time and the entire film is very modern as it deals with a subject matter rarely touched upon previously in Hollywood. It is also one of the first truly modern teen movies.

The poem is beautiful, I loved the ending and that bathtub scene is another highlight as it is so tragic. The film definitely could have been a bit shorter as some scenes needed to be trimmed down a bit as they are slower and not as necessary, but the film owing to its big length succeeds at becoming an epic romance for the ages.

……………………………………………………….

Splendor in the Grass Movie Review……………………………………………………….

It is a beautifully made film. The Technicolor is so good, the film is not well paced, but it is so well directed by Elia Kazan who truly was a superb director. The two actors weren’t as great at first, but they eventually became better and better until giving very admirable performances in the end. The dialogue should have been subtler, but it is still solid and sometimes quite memorable. Its emotion is felt as the film moved me a lot.

Splendor in the Grass is one phenomenal teen romantic drama which deals with its subject of sexual repression in a tragic and very dramatic manner. The performances are very good with Natalie Wood being fantastic, it has a wonderful ending and a couple of tragic scenes while being moving and relatable throughout its runtime. It is a movie that was very modern and sensual owing to its two very good looking actors and thematically bold plot for its time and it should be regarded better nowadays.

Buddy’s Day Out (1933)

Buddy's Day Out ReviewBuddy’s Day Out Review

Buddy’s Day Out is a 1933 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is a pretty good introductory entry for this character.

We follow Buddy with his girlfriend Cookie, their baby and dog as they go out on a picnic. The problem with this film is that the gags are there, but they aren’t that memorable of even emphasized. And of course the plot and the setting are both been there, done that. It is engaging to watch and even charming, but too ordinary to be remembered more.

I liked Buddy here, he was wall introduced and I hope I’ll see him in much better roles from now on as he is likable here, but forgettable. His girlfriend has an interesting look and the baby is amusing. They look like a pretty representative couple for the 1930s and are actually quite memorable as a group, if not individually. The score is solid, but the animation is extraordinary and probably the best in the series so far. Not only are the designs very good, but the film is so polished and so well drawn with such wonderful and charming imagery.

Buddy’s Day Out is typical in plot, but it is so well animated and serves as a solid introduction to Buddy’s character.

Bosko’s Picture Show (1933)

Bosko's Picture Show ReviewBosko’s Picture Show Review

Bosko’s Picture Show is a 1933 animated short film from the Looney Tunes series. It is such a funny and inventive short.

This is easily one of the very best Looney Tunes thus far, so good. Bosko works in a theater and at first he plays news footage and then proceeds to play movies. I loved this premise and especially execution as this is one of the rare 1930s Looney Tunes that heavily contains pop-culture references, but I got most of them as they are so popular. And that made the film very entertaining to me and very funny.

It is uneven and the first couple of videos aren’t that memorable, but the Hitler part is naturally funny and groundbreaking as it is the first portrayal of him in any film. Another great part is the last movie that was played. It is an 1890s flick and the attention to detail that went into recreating it is overwhelming and thus the film is so amusing. But the final moment is genius. Bosko jumps into the screen, fails to enter the movie, but still tarnishes the screen and thus somehow destroys the villain. That was so funny in its ridiculousness.

Bosko’s Picture Show is one of the very best Looney Tunes so far with many very clever gags, a superb premise and great pop-culture references.

Gravity Falls Season 2 (2014)

Gravity Falls Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

Gravity Falls Season 2 Review

The second season of Gravity Falls is such a great season and a major improvement over the previous one. It was such a great swansong for the show.

………………………………………………….

Grunkle Stan, karaoke isn’t about sounding good.

It’s about sounding terrible together

………………………………………………….

Gravity Falls Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

Because this second season is much more connected and spread like one giant story arc, I will thus organize this review character by character unlike going through each episode which I did for the first season. So let’s start with the major characters – the siblings. I just loved Mabel and Dipper. Mabel is as great as ever here and she even became more likable which was almost impossible. A genuine sweetheart, she also got her fair share of development to go through; I loved her various adventures and I loved how she remained an extremely positive and good-hearted person through and through.

Dipper was here much better than the last time around as he got much more to do. I loved how he got to follow the adventure and mystery of the entire town with his new uncle and those episodes were great, but his relationship with Wendy is so well established and of course his sibling relationship with Mabel is extraordinary. The last couple of episodes perfectly showcased the love they have for each other and did that in an emotional, but never overly sentimental manner. They are such a great duo whom I simply adored.

Gravity Falls Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

Grunkle Stan also got some great development and although he was still a bit annoying in certain episodes, he was mostly really well utilized and I especially loved his relationship with his brother. Speaking of Grunkle Ford, he was a bit too serious, but that was needed for this overly goofy and comedic show. I really enjoyed his smart and eccentric mix in personality and he fit so well within the rest of the gang.

Soos was to me the only character who was better in the previous season as here he overstayed his welcome and was quite frankly frustrating at times with his stupidities. But he did get a couple of awesome one-liners here and there. Wendy is pretty good and realistic and he interacted really well with everyone else and is a strong female presence. Waddles should have been used much more and to me Candy Chiu and Grenda were typical, goofy sidekicks. But McGucket is great and I just loved his backstory and how well it explained his current state and behavior. Bill is an over-the-top, but capable villain. Gideon remains a foolish, ridiculous creation and all of the others serve their purpose, but are not memorable enough.

………………………………………………….

Gravity Falls Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

I have to say that I really liked the action in this season. It was overwhelming, but mostly better executed than in the previous season. The three-part finale was very strong and could serve quite well as a movie of sorts. The entire mystery is pretty solid, although the conclusion felt a bit too over-the-top in a typical cartoon fashion. The villains are still pretty good, but definitely typical in their goals. I honestly liked those standalone adventure episodes much more than those important arc episodes, though they were still pretty solid, just not great.

The humor in Gravity Falls is very good and it remained strong throughout this season. Sometimes the jokes were too typical and goofy, but mostly they were good and some lines definitely cracked me up and were unexpectedly hilarious and even clever. I liked the animation and the score and sound effects are all great.

………………………………………………….

Gravity Falls Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

This season is very emotional. All of it, but the highlight is the finale as it was just so powerful and it almost made me cry as I connected with it so much. They had a great childhood and such a wonderful summer, but now they are thirteen, must go back to school and the teenage years and adulthood await. The series did this theme really well as it showcased how wonderful and nostalgic childhood really is, but still reminding us that at some point we need to grow up. Plus I liked that the message here is that you can remain somewhat childlike even as an adult and because I myself am like that, it was great seeing that sentiment here.

I just loved this season so much. It is sometimes inconsistent with some pretty problematic episodes, but most are actually great and it is overall much better than the previous pretty good season. I’ve had such a great time watching this wonderful, childlike, adventurous show and although I am sad that it ended, I still liked that it only got two seasons as it remained great throughout its whole run. Gravity Falls is definitely a future classic.

Worst Episodes: Scary-oke and Little Gift Shop of Horrors.

Best Episodes: The Love God, Not What He Seems, Dipper and Mabel vs. the Future and Weirdmageddon.

My Rating – 4.4

Space Battleship Yamato (1974)

Space Battleship Yamato Review

Space Battleship Yamato Review

Space Battleship Yamato is a 1974 science fiction anime series directed by Leiji Matsumoto. It is such a disappointing show.

………………………………………………….

Bid farewell to the Earth,

for our ship is setting off,

the Space Battleship, Yamato

………………………………………………….

Space Battleship Yamato Review

………………………………………………….

Set in 2199, it follows a titular ship setting on a journey toward a distant star system where they can find help in order to help the dying Earth. Now obviously this isn’t a particularly original premise, but it is actually pretty solid and promising for a show which is why it disappointed me immensely that the execution was so weak and lacking a lot in adventure field.

Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t a bad anime and certainly it has some great episodes with the first and last couple of them being great, but most of the middle parts were actually kind of boring, at least to me personally, as they didn’t quite utilize on their settings or storylines. The action is solid, but nothing spectacular either.

As for its characters, they are the worst here. They aren’t horrible, but they are such bland, overly archaic and actually incredibly dull creations who were just pretty boring to follow on this journey. The characters definitely ruined it for me here.

The animation is pretty solid, especially for its time period. I especially liked some of the imagery and some planets and especially the ship were admittedly really well utilized with a number of interesting scenes and designs. I liked its colors and I mostly liked the looks of aliens and how the action was executed.

………………………………………………….

Space Battleship Yamato Review

………………………………………………….

The score is another highlight, really good and quite memorable. The sound design is very good and particularly the opening is strong and it fits so well with the show with its lyrics and the song’s style. The technical aspects are good here except for the attention to detail as the spacesuits look obviously like 70s clothes which was super distracting. And of course the pacing is bad and the show is actually pretty boring for the majority of its running time which is 26 episodes.

In the end, Space Battleship Yamato is a passable show with good animation and some good episodes, but with a wasted premise on boring and lifeless characters, too many similar and uneventful episodes and some pretty bad choices leading to a pretty big disappointment for me personally.

Worst Episodes: Yamato Sinks!, Yamato Braves Death, Certain Death!, Desperate Escape and Charge!

Best Episodes: The Opening Gun!, Farewell, Solar System!, Planet Beeland and Yamato Returns!

My Rating – 3.3

Autumn (1930)

Autumn ReviewAutumn is a 1930 Disney animated short film. It is a typical short from its time.

This time around we basically follow autumn activities from various animals with the biggest focus given to squirrels as they prepare food for the winter. What I liked here is that the film is realistic and this is how these animals really behave during autumn. That is the biggest reason why it should prove satisfactory for children and a great edutainment for them.

But the film is very weak in terms of storytelling. And highly typical. Again it is realistic and well made and portrayed in animal activities, but the score, though good, is still overwhelming and the film is littered with too many dance sequences. The animation is solid as a whole, but the character designs are once again horrible and unappealing. I just never could get into the designs from this particular period.

Autumn serves as a solid edutainment for children, but it is too musically oriented and containing typically unappealing animal designs.

I’ve Got to Sing a Torch Song (1933)

I've Got to Sing a Torch Song ReviewI’ve got to Sing a Torch Song Review

I’ve Got to Sing a Torch Song is a 1933 animated short film from the Merry Melodies series. It is such a standard parody.

This is another one of those Merry Melodies from the thirties that is basically a parody of various celebrities of its time. Some I did not get, but some were quite funny with the highlights being James Cagney, Greta Garbo and Mae West. Those three are very funny here, but maybe they focused on Mae West too much as this is probably the fourth or so time that they portrayed her in this series.

The plot is non-existent and the film is just an excuse to venture into various pop-culture gags. Now, because only a couple of them were amusing, I found the film to be lacking and that gag-oriented choice to be overly excessive. The titular musical number is very good, but the film is so crowded with characters and so fast paced that it becomes way too frenetic.

I’ve Got to Sing a Torch Song is frenetic and crowded, but with some nice celebrity gags in it.

Rick and Morty Season 2 (2015)

Rick and Morty Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

Rick and Morty Season 2 Review

The second season of Rick and Morty is such a major improvement over its predecessor and it’s the first truly great season for the series.

………………………………………………….

Thanks, Mr. Poopy Butthole.

I could always count on you

………………………………………………….

Rick and Morty Season 2 Review

………………………………………………….

I did not care for A Rinkle in Time as it features a typical Beth and Jerry subplot and a rather annoying, however original Rick and Morty storyline. The animation and the premise are very unique, but the overall episode got repetitive pretty quickly.
Mortynight Run is another problematic episode with a premise that is suitable, but familiar for the show and it is one of those typically crowded and fast paced Rick and Morty outings.
Auto Erotic Assimilation is very good as we finally get a glimpse into Rick’s past relationships with excellent results. It is an interesting episode conceptually and it has a great emphasis on his character.
Total Rickall is absolutely fantastic! This is the quintessential example of the show’s ability to turn a tired concept into an original and truly unique episode. Here ‘The Thing’ is definitely at its core, but the execution is much wilder as we see aliens populating their house by posing as good-natured imaginary friends. It is a brilliant idea flawlessly executed and the twist ending with Mr. Poopy Butthole is just hilarious.

Rick and Morty Season 2 Review
………………………………………………….
Get Schwifty isn’t the greatest episode as it relies heavily on stupid rap music, but it is still a pretty good tackling of ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ in the typical style of the show.
I found The Ricks Must Be Crazy to be the weakest, most poorly constructed episode as both of its subplots didn’t do anything for me and were not all that interesting.
Big Trouble in Little Sanchez is phenomenal for providing us two great subplots. The one with Rick is very entertaining and with a creepy tone to it, but it is Beth and Jerry who are the highlights here as they go to marriage counseling. This was long overdue and this episode explored their relationship superbly.
Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate is another very strong episode and a major improvement over last season’s Rixty Minutes as this time around alien television is actually pretty entertaining and funny without getting repetitive. And also Jerry’s penis removal subplot was very good despite it reminding me too much of Futurama’s Spanish Fry from its fourth season.
Look Who’s Purging Now is probably my favorite episode here, so good. It is a phenomenal exploration of its subject matter with very brutal scenes, but those serve the plot and are at times even funny. I loved the story, but Morty’s character development is exceptional here.

Rick and Morty Season 2 Review
………………………………………………….
The Wedding Squanchers really changed the game for the entire series. Finally we see consequences for Rick’s actions in that beautiful ending where he surrenders and saves his family. The entire episode is fun, but those last scenes were not only great, but refreshingly dramatic and important for the series continuity.
In the end, this second season really is stupendous. It still has annoying Rick and forced humor with some weak episodes, but at leastwe finally see some exploration of both Rick and Morty’s characters and the high number of truly fantastic and authentic episodes doesn’t hurt either.
Worst Episodes: Mortynight Run and The Ricks Must Be Crazy.
Best Episodes: Total Rickall, Look Who’s Purging Now and The Wedding Squanchers.

Rick and Morty Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

Rick and Morty Season 1 Review

Rick and Morty is a 2013 science fiction comedy animated show on Adult Swim. It is a pretty solid and interesting, but very troublesome and ultimately overrated series.

………………………………………………….

Nobody exists on purpose.

Nobody belongs anywhere.

Everybody’s gonna die

………………………………………………….

Rick and Morty Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

The first season has 11 episodes and I will talk about each of its episodes shortly, but first I am going to comment upon each of its characters and the overall storyline and technical aspects. I like Morty and these two have an interesting, definitely original relationship like no other. However, I dislike Rick so much. He is to me overly aggressive with his humor, too rude and just plain unlikable for the majority of the episodes. The two have an interesting dynamic, but it hurts that he is this unlikable as it ultimately renders the entire show annoying in a way.

As for the Smiths, I liked them much more in fact. Summer is a typical, forgettable teenage girl, but Beth is quite memorable and very funny. Her horse surgeon profession is interesting and played for laughs really well. Jerry is the standout character of the show in my book as his insecurities make him realistic and I really liked his relationship with everyone else, especially Beth.

………………………………………………….

Rick and Morty Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

The show has such a crude, typical and ultimately unmemorable animation. But the sound design and score are good with the opening and closing theme being quite memorable and atmospheric. The storyline is solid and sometimes even original. I like its science fiction elements quite a bit, but in my opinion it is so-so as a comedy. Sometimes it can be quite funny, but it is mostly funny with Beth and Jerry as Rick is just too annoying with his forced, immature humor. The show definitely tries too much to be hip, cool and mature that it leads to an obvious lack of confidence and realism.

Pilot is a solid first episode and it does introduce you to its characters in a good way and the story is good, but it isn’t particularly memorable in the long run. Lawnmower Dog is terrific and is actually one of the best, if not the very best, episodes of the season. The dream subplot with Rick and Morty is well established and sometimes even funny and inventive, but it is the other subplot with dogs becoming smart that is the highlight as it perfectly comments on the complicated history between humans and dogs and the moral ramifications of such relationships.

………………………………………………….

Rick and Morty Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

Anatomy Park is another very strong episode with Jerry being very good and the duo’s journey into the human body is familiar, but done really well and in an entertaining manner. M. Night Shaym-Aliens! again features excellent Jerry, but the entire storyline, though solid, is in the end overly typical.

Meeseeks and Destroy is very good with the titular creatures being a lot of fun and quite unforgettable, but it was interesting seeing Morty question his role in the duo’s adventures as well. Rick Potion #9 is very predictable and unoriginal in its storyline, but again it succeeds in those small moments with Jerry again stealing the show entirely.

Raising Gazorpazorp is actually quite smart and truthful in its parenting theme and message, but it also features a very good, if again typical, subplot with Rick and Summer and it was interesting seeing the two have an adventure for a change. Rixty Minutes ended in such a sweet, satisfactory scene for Beth and Jerry, but the entire alien TV commercial story, although unique, was ultimately overplayed and it became very repetitive.

………………………………………………….

Rick and Morty Season 1 Review

………………………………………………….

Something Ricked This Way Comes has its moments, but is definitely one of the weakest and dullest episodes so far. Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind is overly action-oriented, but it features a very good and sophisticated examination of the relationship between the two protagonists. Ricksy Business is very satisfying in its amusing, heartwarming ending and although it was again forced in most of its jokes, the episode still worked with its interesting premise and a superb, funny subplot with Jerry and Beth.

In the end, the first season of Rick and Morty is quite solid, but not as great as critics make it out to be. Jerry is great and the duo is interesting, but Rick remains annoying and the humor is mostly too forced. But its science fiction tales were mostly memorable and even unique that it is definitely worth a watch.

Worst Episodes: Rixty Minutes and Something Ricked This Way Comes.

Best Episodes: Lawnmower Dog and Anatomy Park.

My Rating – 3.8
