It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown (1983)

It's an Adventure, Charlie Brown ReviewIt’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown Review

It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown is a 1983 animated television special and the 25th entry in the Peanuts series. It is a solid, but very uneven entry.

This is another proof that it is very difficult to make a 47 minute special instead of the usual 20 or so minutes. This special is just needlessly overlong and some parts are great, but some are pretty weak. Let’s talk about each one of the eight segments there is in it. Sack is pretty good and I liked this again very brutal depiction of Charlie Brown’s unpopularity. He starts to become popular while wearing a sack on his head, but as soon as he removes it, things go back to the usual for poor old Chuck.

Caddies is a very poor Peppermint Patty part and I really disliked her voice here. Kite is interesting, but a bit too long. It does have an original storyline though. Sally is charming is usual in her segment, Butterfly is forgettable and Woodstock is an ordinary part with these two, although I definitely liked Snoopy in some of the previous scenes here. Lucy’s part with Schroeder is as great as usual and Blanket is a very interesting exploration of Linus’s obsession with this object.

It’s an Adventure, Charlie Brown is very uneven due to a couple of clunkers, but there are some truly great segments here nonetheless.

South Park Season 14 (2010)

South Park Season 14 Review………………………………………………………………………

South Park Season 14 Review

The fourteenth season of South Park (and its second half in particular) is another great season and possibly one of the best seasons in the series’ history owing to many classic episodes.

………………………………………………………………………

………………………………………………………………………

Sexual Healing………………………………………………………………………

Sexual Healing isn’t one of the strongest points of this season, but it is still pretty good and frequently hilarious in its portrayal of Tiger Woods, his video game as well as the clueless attitudes of the men for why famous people are sex addicts. That was all hilarious and ridiculous in a typical South Park fashion and the episode, while repetitive, is very funny and entertaining to watch.

The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs is not only one of the best episodes ever, but it just might be the very best in my opinion. It is that great! Butters is absolutely fantastic here and so funny whereas the critique of critics finding meaning in even the more meaningless works of fiction is so on-point, sophisticated and done with hilarious results. There is also a great parody of Sarah Jessica Parker and some scenes are just hysterical how funny they are from the ridicule of Parker to all the vomiting to many absolutely fantastic lines from Butters. The ending is also spectacular and the Kardashians are superbly made fun of here too.

Medicinal Fried Chicken is one of the worst episodes of season fourteen mainly because neither of its two subplots is particularly good or funny. The gangster one with Cartman is somewhat boring and annoying whereas the testicular one with Randy was too ridiculous to me, albeit it did provide a couple of chuckles here and there.

You Have 0 Friends is another classic. It isn’t one of the greatest episodes ever, but it surely is a fantastic parody of Facebook and its take on FarmVille is absolutely hilarious. Stan is really good here as well and those ‘Tron’ sequences were smartly incorporated into the main storyline. Cartman is also great here and I thought that the entire episode wonderfully made fun of Facebook and everything that it entails.

………………………………………………………………………

Crippled Summer………………………………………………………………………

The two hundred duology is a flawed, yet at times brilliant experience. 200 is the weaker episode as it doesn’t have enough laughs and it is incredibly disappointing that even Trey Parker and Matt Stone succumbed to the threats of the Muslim terrorists and did not show Muhammad properly. However, 201 is the better part as it ends on such a high note. The whole Cartman’s father storyline is fantastic and fueled with some great meta-humor, but the ending itself just might be my favorite scene of any South Park episode! It is just phenomenal, hilarious, perfectly executed and filled with classic line after line.

Crippled Summer doesn’t have the greatest Towelie subplot, but the other subplot with Nathan and Mimsy is so good. It is a wonderful homage to old cartoons, but it also introduces these two characters in such a great fashion and their dynamic is just brilliant. It doesn’t feel like a South Park episode, but it is nonetheless a very fun and interesting experience.

Poor and Stupid is a masterpiece. Everything in this episode works to the fullest degree – we get another iconic pairing of Butters and Cartman and both are great, we get a great parody of NASCAR fans and the subplot with Vagisil is simultaneously ridiculous and hilarious. But it is Erik Cartman who shines here and his role here is quite possibly the best in this entire season as he has so many memorable lines and is so funny with his scenes with Kenny being hysterical.

………………………………………………………………………

It's a Jersey Thing………………………………………………………………………

It’s a Jersey Thing is a very weird, but interesting episode. Those New Jersey people and that behavior can lead to many repetitive moments here, but it is great that we finally get to see more development for Sheila Broflovski and she has never been this good or interesting.

Insheeption is such a fantastic parody of ‘Inception‘. That is the movie that I thoroughly dislike and the fact that the SP creators perfectly make fun of it and show why it is ridiculous is the reason why this episode is awesome. But we also get a great Mr. Mackey episode here and he has rarely been this good. His backstory is excellent and some moments here are so funny with the mockery of the sheep herder and the explanation of that movie’s plot being the highlights.

I don’t know if The Coon trilogy is the best South Park trilogy, but it surely is fantastic. It has a problem in that it would have worked better as a duology which is evident in Mysterion Rises which is a very prolonged, somewhat slower second part. But Coon 2: Hindsight is excellent with Captain Hindsight being so funny and I loved all of those superhero identities of the boys with Mintberry Crunch being the standout. Coon vs. Coon and Friends is a great conclusion of this trilogy with great action, a great Justin Bieber moment and a terrific, smart explanation of Kenny’s deaths.

………………………………………………………………………

Creme Fraiche………………………………………………………………………

Creme Fraiche is the last episode of this season and it is one of its finest. The take on food channels is so funny as they are basically portrayed as food porn, but it is Randy who is absolutely hilarious in a season that did not showcase his character much. And the Sharon and Shake Weight subplot is just brilliant and again laugh out loud funny. The way these two subplots connected is so clever and this is probably the best Randy/Sharon episode ever.

In the end, while it most certainly has its weaker episodes, most of this season’s episodes are just phenomenal with a couple of those being classics and some of the best of all time. Yes, Randy wasn’t in it as much and Cartman only gets a handful of his episodes, but that is why this season is great as it focuses on many other characters as well and it has some of the more interesting and experimental episodes that we haven’t seen before. For all of those reasons, the fourteenth season is one of the best seasons of this series without a doubt.

………………………………………………………………………

Worst Episodes: Medicinal Fried Chicken, 200 and It’s a Jersey Thing.

Best Episodes: The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs, You Have 0 Friends, Poor and Stupid, Coon 2: Hindsight and Creme Fraiche.

My Rating – 4.6

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Movie Review

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is a 1948 horror comedy film directed by Charles Barton and starring Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. It is a very good comedy flick.

……………………………………………………………..

I saw what I saw when I saw it!

……………………………………………………………..

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

The film basically follows this duo as they encounter Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolf Man. What I liked about it is that it is genuinely funny at times and the humor is mostly very satisfying leading to a successful genre film. And although the story is definitely familiar, it is still pretty solid for this type of film.

Abbott and Costello are absolutely fantastic here. This is my first introduction to their work and I have to say that I really liked both of them. Abbott is a great straight man and he wonderfully fulfils that role. But of course this is Costello’s vehicle and he is absolutely terrific. He is not only very charismatic, but also evidently funny and so incredibly likable. Bela Lugosi is really good and at times even great in the role of Dracula, Lon Chaney Jr. isn’t as great as he was in ‘The Wolf Man‘, but he’s still a welcome addition and Frankenstein’s monster is the least memorable of the villains mostly because Boris Karloff did not reprise his role from ‘Frankenstein’ and because the monster just wasn’t emphasized nearly as enough as he should have been.

……………………………………………………………..

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is very well directed and edited while also having pretty good cinematography and some really fun special effects. The effects of Dracula transforming into a bat were pretty neat and visually intriguing. The acting is great as I said before and the film is genuinely atmospheric at times. That is both the film’s weakness and strength. It is definitely eerie at times and it utilizes its imagery and its monsters surprisingly well, but the problem is that it sometimes sacrifices genuine horror for laughs and the mix of horror and comedy isn’t that well established in this particular case.

The movie is immensely entertaining, at least it was for me. Its slight running time flew by and I had a great, amusing time watching at and I laughed most of the time or at least smiled. I have to say that it caught me by surprise how good it was as I did not expect that. The highlights for me were the extended sequence at the beginning where Lou was continually scared and that whole basement sequence was perfectly executed and a lot of fun.

……………………………………………………………..

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

So the movie is fun, it serves its purpose as a comedy and it flies by. However, it isn’t great as the plot is too simplistic, some characters do not work as much as the others do and the whole third act I really didn’t like. The action at the end was so typical, so uninspired and the movie just became pretty tired at that point whereas it was very energetic before. But the ending itself saved it as ‘The Invisible Man’ was hinted and that was just a lot of fun and done in the most entertaining manner possible. Overall, the film is very good, but not as great as it could have been.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein has a very uninspired third act and some characters work better than the others, but the film is a lot of fun and it was immensely entertaining watching three big Universal monsters in one movie. The atmosphere is effective, the imagery is terrific, the titular duo is just fantastic and the humor is pretty good leading to a very satisfying comedy flick that is also energetic, well edited and just fun.

Frankenstein (1818)

Frankenstein Book Review……………………………………………………………..

Frankenstein Book Review

Frankenstein is an 1818 classic horror novel written by Mary Shelley. It is a famous and respectable, if frankly very flawed work.

……………………………………………………………..

How mutable are our feelings,

and how strange is that clinging love

we have of life even in the excess of misery!

……………………………………………………………..

Frankenstein Book Review……………………………………………………………..

It follows a young scientist who creates a grotesque but sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. The story itself is excellent and certainly groundbreaking for its time which is the reason why the critics had harsh things to say about it initially. But its now classic status is very much deserved just because this set a template for not only horror, but also science fiction. It is also a great gothic tale.

I loved its themes. The main character is a strong metaphor for God which is evident in his name Victor which apparently means god in Paradise Lost. The message here is strong – man shouldn’t play God and it could and here it does have major, tragic consequences. Speaking of tragic, I also really admired its emotion. The book is very emotional and sometimes even quite heartbreaking, especially in Victor and also Frankenstein’s thoughts and of course that tragic, powerful ending.

……………………………………………………………..

Frankenstein Book Review……………………………………………………………..

But the reason why I still found it to be a very flawed novel is because it just isn’t investing. Frankly, it was quite boring, slow and sometimes even a shore to sit through. It was written in a way that it can’t be enjoyed by today’s audiences, at least in my opinion.

I really respect Mary Shelley and I have a strong admiration for her. It must have been tough for women writers back in the first half of the nineteenth century, but she managed to prove everyone wrong by writing a really strong and influential story for the ages. And how she came to write it through her dream is quite a fascinating story in its own right.

But her writing style isn’t for me. It is very much a product of its time. The sentences are overlong and convoluted and although the descriptive passages were excellent, the monologues and the thoughts of the characters, although emotionally powerful, were still sometimes dull as they were written in a prolonged, unnecessarily complicated manner.

……………………………………………………………..

Frankenstein Book Review……………………………………………………………..

And I just found Frankenstein to not be that much of a horror, I get that it probably was scary or at least atmospheric for the audiences of that day, but nowadays it can’t be called a horror, at least not in my opinion. It is a great gothic tale, but I would never call it horror and that was a problem for me not only in the wrong classification by scholars, but also because I wanted it to be more atmospheric. It is tragic and a great cautionary tale, but never scary. Another problem is the book’s unwillingness to go into dramatic territory. It just needed more drama not only in its dialogue, but also in its scenes.

Frankenstein’s imagery is pretty solid and sometimes it evokes some very intriguing imagery. The characters were solid, but far from great. Victor is excellent as is the creature (erroneously called Frankenstein by many), but his story isn’t particularly well realized. Victor’s story is great, but I just never bought the way this ‘wretched creature’ learned language and everything else. That was a bit abrupt and unrealistic to me which is a contrast to an otherwise realistic novel. But his story is still tragic.

……………………………………………………………..

Frankenstein Movie Review……………………………………………………………..

I didn’t like the structure of the novel and particularly its epistolary form bothered me as I just find that approach quite dull and uninspired. It was typical for its time, but is now not that involving and rarely satisfying. For all of those reasons, the 1931 film is much better than the original book, but I still admire it for its deservedly important place in literature.

Frankenstein is important and groundbreaking with solid characters and such an influential, excellent and tragic story that is a great cautionary and gothic tale, but its epistolary structure is unsatisfying, the book is mostly boring and it is just never as atmospheric or as involving as I wanted it to be.

Girls Season 1 (2012)

Girls Season 1 Review……………………………………………………………….

Girls Season 1 Review

Girls is a 2012 dramedy TV show starring and directed by Lena Dunham. It is a mostly unpleasant, yet realistic series.

……………………………………………………………….

Holding on to toxic relationships keeps us from growing

……………………………………………………………….

Girls Season 1 Review……………………………………………………………….

It follows four young women living in New York City. First of all, I find its comparison to ‘Sex and the City‘ not only unfair, but also not particularly applicable. To me, this is anti ‘Sex and the City‘ because it is just so opposite from that show in most of its aspects. The friendship here is much more grounded in reality and not much of a friendship at all. The characters are unlikable, conceited and selfish and their faiths are very much influenced by that, at least thus far. I also liked its more raw and realistic approach to sex and sex scenes were too graphic, but still interesting and I liked how it was portrayed. The entire show is very realistic which I loved about it, but those extremely unlikable characters can be a double-edged sword at times given how the show isn’t really fun to watch, but rather unpleasant at times. It isn’t much of a comedy and is much more of a drama than a dramedy.

The first season consists of ten episodes and all of them are either 3.5 or 4 star quality for me. That means that not one of these episodes is bad, but it also means that not one of them is great as all are just quite good and never great as all of them have some annoying developments in them that take away from the overall quality and the experience.

……………………………………………………………….

Girls Season 1 Review……………………………………………………………….

I will now talk about each and every character and thus I will also elaborate on their stories and most of the developments in this first season. The supporting characters are all pretty good and well developed and I really found it interesting how most of the men here are good people, quite the contrast from the girls. Charlie is the best example of that. I just felt sorry for the guy as he is so reliable and so good-natured and yet was stuck with Marnie who was awful to him. But that is relatable as there are a lot of people like him who are too good and thus end up being the victims in a relationship.

Jeff is a typical old man who got infatuated with Jessa and wanted to cheat on his wife, but she thankfully turned him down. As for Katherine, I didn’t get why she wanted for Jessa to return and that was odd as was her entire character. Thomas-John is a decidedly annoying man as he’s written that way and I’ve had a big problem with the conclusion to Jessa’s story this time around. The wedding of these two came out of nowhere, but not in a good way. It was odd and too abrupt.

……………………………………………………………….

Girls Season 1 Review……………………………………………………………….

Elijah is a somewhat typical gay character, but I loved every conversation he had with Marnie and Hannah and how he put them in their places. He is one of the rare people that knows exactly how awful those two are. Hannah’s parents are so likable, I loved their relationship and especially how they portrayed an old married couple that still has sex. That was great and every scene with them was a winner in my book. I really liked Ray as well. He could be annoying at times, but he is a realistic character as is everyone here and I liked his relationship with Shoshanna.

Speaking of her, she is the only girl here that is frustratingly underdeveloped. I don’t get why she continues to be sidelined. Her virginity was a big arc for her here and I liked that she lost it in the end as I wouldn’t like for it to drag more. She is somewhat of a caricature, but the reason why she’s good nonetheless is because she is very likable, charming and at times quite funny in her weird behavior and lines. I really like her and I hope she’ll get more to do later on.

……………………………………………………………….

Girls Season 1 Review……………………………………………………………….

Jessa is extremely annoying to me as I just strongly dislike her type. She is such a conceited, selfish woman that is always acting ‘cool’ and never paying attention to anyone or anything. Cocky and arrogant are some of the worst character traits which is why she was so frustrating to me along with her also being not as well utilized as Hannah and Marnie.

Marnie is just awful. I hated her and even though I came to somewhat sympathize with her in the second half of the season, I still hated her for being awful to Charlie and for being such a terrible person to begin with. She isn’t as bad a friend as others here are, but how she treats men is just appalling.

……………………………………………………………….

Girls Season 1 Review……………………………………………………………….

Girls is such an unpleasant at times viewing experience as it has not one, but three extremely unlikable characters. At first, I hated Jessa the most. Then I switched my hatred towards Marnie. And finally I landed on Hannah as she truly is the absolute worst, such a horrible human being. Her constant selfishness really got on my nerves, she treated Marnie horribly which is why I loved their final confrontation and that it had big consequences. She is never a good friend, she was also horrible to Adam near the end and she masks her selfishness and many awful traits with a facade of her insecurities, mainly of her figure. That means that she is also extremely manipulative towards both her parents and her friends and boyfriend and she is just too lazy, selfish and plain horrible at times to be forgiven.

Adam is the most interesting main character here mainly because he was the most seemingly shallow guy at first, but then he was quickly developed to become a very fascinating figure. His troubled past, his crazy personality and his evident care towards Hannah all led to such an interesting character and I liked their relationship and the season ended on a high note with those two.

……………………………………………………………….

Girls Season 1 Review……………………………………………………………….

Girls is really well made with excellent cinematography and superb direction from Lena Dunham. She also gave the finest performance of the bunch and that is so commendable. But Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Adam Driver are also really good in their roles and everyone here really did a great job. This season overall was quite strong, but still had its many unfortunate plot points including Jessa’s wedding, Shoshanna’s drug scene and a really slow and somewhat frustrating start. It also never achieved greatness which is frustrating given its potential and it is at times way too unpleasant to watch. I’ve constantly had the urge to punch either Marnie or Jessa or Hannah and that was a weird feeling. The show is maybe too realistic for its own sake. Plus its humor is not that present. It did provide a few chuckles here and there, but it was never hilarious and I wouldn’t really call it a dramedy.

The first season of Girls is never great and is too unpleasant of an experience, but I liked its realistic edge and those characters were so unlikable and sometimes even terrible, but so well developed and with mostly satisfying arcs. The show is also well directed and acted with good dialogue and it was overall a satisfying experience.

The Tigger Movie (2000)

The Tigger Movie Review………………………………………………………………

The Tigger Movie Review

The Tigger Movie is a 2000 animated family film directed by Jun Falkenstein. It is a slight, very problematic Winnie the Pooh entry.

It is about Tigger searching for his family and others like him. Now, the major problem this movie has is obvious and that is of course the fact that it is solely about Tigger meaning that it is a sort of a Winnie the Pooh spin-off. And yes, that character is wonderful. However, as we all know, movies that take this approach usually fail and this is no exception. Supporting characters are supporting for a reason and I am afraid that Tigger, with all his charm, was never suited for a full-length adventure.

………………………………………………………………

You can’t bounce the bounce if you can’t even pronounce the bounce

………………………………………………………………

The Tigger Movie Review………………………………………………………………

That is not to say that he is bad. He is still pretty solid. He has some great moments here, but those mostly happen in the first and third act with the second one sorely lacking. I loved that heartwarming ending as it was just so delightful and emotional watching Tigger realize that his real family has always been Pooh and friends. That was very touching and a perfect conclusion for this movie.

The entire plot here is pretty good on paper, especially for this character but the execution of it is, I’m afraid, quite poor. It is very odd to me that this movie didn’t get the same treatment that 2011’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ got and that is the running time of an hour. Instead, it got 75 minutes and, needless to say, it felt prolonged and boring as the plot itself is very simple and didn’t need this many minutes. That is why both the aforementioned film and of course ‘The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh’ are much better than The Tigger Movie.

………………………………………………………………

The Tigger Movie Review………………………………………………………………

The animation is pretty solid. In fact, it is one of the strongest aspects here as it is worthy of a theatrical release and sometimes even very beautiful and warm as is this whole property. I loved the colors and I loved the simple designs and backgrounds.

But the editing is naturally problematic as is the pacing and the entire second act is pretty boring. Also, the film can be overly childish at times instead of being pleasantly childlike. And I respect Jim Cummings as he is a great voice talent, but his Tigger voice isn’t as good as the original from the 1977 version. But his Pooh voice is very good and all of the other voices are fine. I enjoyed some of the details here such as that opening book as that beginning with Tigger was very funny and endearing.

………………………………………………………………

The Tigger Movie Review………………………………………………………………

The soundtrack is easily the worst offender here. Wow, is it uninspired and annoying. Of course, The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers is a classic, but a classic just taken from previous movies. But all of the original songs are just so bland with How to Be a Tigger being quite annoying and that bouncing song being very childish. These kind of songs are childish and not childlike and there is a big difference between the two, but they are also lyrically uninspired and tonally forgettable.

The Tigger Movie has a fun opening, very good animation and such a heartwarming ending, but everything in the second act is boring and prolonged and the film should have been just an hour long as its plot is pretty simple. But the biggest offender is the soundtrack which is just so bland and the problem here is that Tigger is better off as a supporting character instead of a lead which was obvious from the beginning. It is an okay movie, but still far too slight for Winnie the Pooh standards.

Fleets of Stren’th (1942)

Fleets of Stren'th ReviewFleets of Stren’th Review

Fleets of Stren’th is a 1942 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is another typical war entry.

This one is, unlike, ‘Blunder Below‘, quite forgettable and even more bland than usual. It does get its good moments such as the opening of the spinach which is once more pretty memorable with the bullets from the plane now doing the trick and the film is well scored and animated, but it is just too action oriented to be enjoyed more.

Literally all of the scenes here are action scenes with us basically watching a cartoon war picture with Popeye. Him turning into a plane was fun, but everything else fell short of being either exciting or memorable and it was just another excuse to make this all about WWII which is so typical of the films of its day.

Fleets of Stren’th has its memorable moments near the end, but other scenes are all either forgettable or uninspired in action and humor.

Mean Streets (1973)

Mean Streets Movie Review…………………………………………………………………

Mean Streets Movie Review

Mean Streets is a 1973 crime film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel. It is a solid film.

…………………………………………………………………

You don’t make up for your sins in church.

You do it in the streets. You do it at home.

The rest is bullshit and you know it

…………………………………………………………………

Mean Streets Movie Review…………………………………………………………………

As crime films go, this one is actually pretty solid. It is still far from great, but having in mind my usual dislike for the genre, this is as far as I could like a gangster film, I guess. The story itself is solid and I really enjoyed the theme of religion in it as well as the relationship between the two men as well as the romantic relationship. Truly all of the character interactions here are quite good and sometimes the film could be quite tender which I didn’t expect at all.

The acting is one of its strongest suits. Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel both gave truly great performances in one of their first roles. The directing from Scorsese is as great as always and the editing is also pretty solid. But I was still bored by the movie at times and somehow the structure didn’t work for me as the entire middle act should have been reduced a bit as the ending should have been more emphasized and the beginning isn’t the most memorable.

…………………………………………………………………

Mean Streets Movie Review…………………………………………………………………

But it is well made and really well scored. It has a terrific score to be honest with many great hits from the sixties and seventies and its soundtrack is one of the highlights. But I’ve had some problems with the script. Yes, it did have its great emotional and dramatic moments and that ending is so great in its ambiguity, but it still had its typical crime trappings such as excessive violence and some very annoying dialogue in it. Not one of the characters was even remotely likable to me and they all talked and acted in a way that I find extremely insufferable. But that is the problem all of these films have and Scorsese is definitely a master of the crime/gangster genre as he at least managed to make some meaningful entries and this one, although flawed, is still quite solid and at times even great.

Mean Streets has annoying characters as well as a boring second act, but as crime films go, it is as good as it can get with some pretty dramatic scenes with even some tender moments in them, excellent performances from Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro and a great ambiguous ending.

Blunder Below (1942)

Blunder Below ReviewBlunder Below Review

Blunder Below is a 1942 animated short from Popeye the Sailor series. It is a typical war propaganda film of its time.

Popeye is in the navy and has trouble learning the ropes, but when the Japanese submarine emerges, he attacks it using his specialty which is of course spinach. Needless to say, I really liked that ending. Despite its poor taste, those action moments were so great and it was funny watching Popeye in this environment. The entire short is pretty slow and sometimes even dull, but that ending is great along with the final line. The beginning is also pretty amusing.

But it is a typical war entry meaning that it is not much of a Popeye short as it is a propaganda piece. And I really disliked the stereotypical portrayal of Japanese people with large teeth and squeaky voice. That was awful to witness, but expected from the 40s. But having in mind its theme, the film could have been much worse.

Blunder Below is stereotypical and an unfortunate war entry, but it is still pretty solid owing to a great beginning and awesome ending.

The Last Starfighter (1984)

The Last Starfighter Movie Review…………………………………………………………

The Last Starfighter Movie Review

The Last Starfighter is a 1984 family science fiction film directed by Nick Castle. It is one of the most overrated blockbusters of its time.

…………………………………………………………

Greetings, Starfighter.

You have been recruited by the Star League

to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada

…………………………………………………………

The Last Starfighter Movie Review…………………………………………………………

It is about a teenager who gets recruited by an alien defense force to fight in an interstellar war due to his particular skills at playing arcade video games. What is the major problem with the story is that it’s just very clichéd and not to mention incredibly unrealistic and too much of a fantasy, even for a kid’s film. And I just was never invested in it at all.

The Last Starfighter is a childish film even by my very low standards. It is just too immature and childish and in my opinion science fiction and family entertainment do not mix well whatsoever and that is best exemplified in this particular flick. It surely has its charm at times and it is of course far from a bad movie as it is pretty serviceable, but it is never particularly good either and it is a film that those that grew up with it of course would love, but because I am a 90s kid and I haven’t seen it as a child, it was to me a too childish and over-the-top experience.

The acting isn’t great and the special effects are a mixed bag. On the one hand, they do look dated and evidently of its time, but on the other hand, this is one of the earliest movies along with ‘Tron‘ to extensively utilize computer-generated imagery and you have to admire it for that.

…………………………………………………………

The Last Starfighter Movie Review…………………………………………………………

The film starts and ends in a pretty solid manner, but everything that came in the middle was sorely lacking as it was either dull or immature or frankly campy and cheesy at times. The Last Starfighter is one giant 80s cheese and that I never liked and I didn’t like it here too. In the end, although it has its strengths, it is such an overrated, uninspired and cheesy sci-fi flick that only children and those who grew up with it could really enjoy.

The Last Starfighter is sometimes endearing, its use of CGI is groundbreaking and the film is good for children, but it is way too childish for adults and way too cheesy even for 80s standards. It is a movie that those who grew up with it and kids could enjoy, but everyone else would find boring, immature and uninspired and that is exactly what I thought of it.
